D'Arcy Your character looks like a junkie ... in the cutscenes, which is really the only place you're actually able to see him
 Sorry I missed your post D'Arcy.
Actually every time I see the character's shadow, I see that junkie shadow. Looks like he's on heroin. Moping about, with a hoody. I used to work in pharmacy, and I can see a junkie miles off. Maybe it's a special Russian archetype. I dunno. There's no accounting for taste. :laff:

Well he does survive on bread, diet sausage and tinned pudding so what can you expect?
I'm not sure what you meant about walk mode not being in the unmodded game, just press shift mate.

I don't recall if oisin posted if he played a patched version or not; but the unpatched out-of-the-box version had broken stealth and I had the same experience. However, with patch 1.0001 it now works to hide in bushes, and I can sneak up on npc's (at least to about 2 feet from them from their backsides).

I'm running version 1.0001 and the stealth is weird in my case. Sometimes hiding in bushes works, but hiding behind walls; hell no. I camped outside the military base in Agroprom, there was not a single guy in sight and yet the siren went off after a few minutes while I was waiting for the right time to sneak in.
Call me crazy, but I think that's unusual. Also the siren goes off if you kill a guy in a watch tower with a silenced pistol, but not if you use a knife...

Yep, sorry, he isn't that muscular type in red shirt and with glossy face and hair from FarCry. Devs somehow decided to not include dolls in this game :)

You explained why those tough guys never talk in FPS games; they're dolls. :joke:

Like I said, he spends his times roaming and scavenging through highly irradiated areas. He was nearly dead when you start the game. It would look pretty irrealistic if he looked like some sort of muscular, healthy guy, don't you think? :)
As for the Dick Cheney fella, yes, he had to go to a hospital to survive, but he was 78 years old and, like I said, wasn't wearing any sort of protective gear, unlike the characters in the game. Buckshot can do a lot of damage, but unless you're holding the gun a few centimeters away from your target, I doubt that it could be immediately fatal under those conditions.

I thought Doom3 was the only game that scared me since System Shock 2. I'd stay up until the 'wee hours with headphones on in pitch black. It was a great game :D
It's not difficult to scare people with tons of surprose BOO attacks. It is much more valuable to present an atmosphere of creeping, omnipresent, subtle dread.
Yes it's so great - you don't have too think much while you play it, neither it does bother higher aesthetic taste.

Doom 3 wasn't even remotely scary in my opinion, maybe the first 2 - 3 levels but the same boo attacks over and over again made me used to them after that.

Yeah, I and someone else I knew even ended up preparing to fire at various alcoves/doors before the monsters even popped out. It was just too predictable.

Absolutely false.Sounds to me like you're playing a different game than the rest of us. I've been playing for weeks, taking my time and doing so much freeform that even after all that, I've only just managed to finish up Yantar.
It's really too bad you had such a negative experience with STALKER, because it's a fantastic game. The stealth action may be tough, but it works; I had an absolute blast in the car park near the start of the game, sneaking around in the dead of night with a silenced pistol, bringing down guys who didn't even know I was there. It takes too much effort to be practical through the bulk of the game, but it's there.
We could trade anecdotes all day and it wouldn't mean a thing, I suppose. Just remember that there's a big difference between, "I didn't like it," and, "it doesn't work."
