Allright, borrowed a freinds copy of S.T.A.L.K.E.R for a few days, excellent game, engine needs a lot of refining though :/
I'm running it huuugely tweaked down to maximize performance (512mb RAM is a bitch  ) and it runs allright after 5-8 minutes of movement, firing and using ironsights. But it repeats this every single level change, or whenever i start a game. Is this related to my GPU (nVidia 6200 128mb(and the 6200 does do HDR btw :D)) or my RAM (512mb PC3200 DDR)?

Both seem far from ideal for running stalker...

I'd rather say your system is the one that needs some improvements, if I need to be honest. :erm:
The Geforce 6000 series are getting to the low-end category nowdays, plus 512 MBs became a minimum for games long time ago.

Yes, i know my system sucks for games, but S.T.A.L.K.E.R should not run as choppy as it does. this is my USER.LTX file, with my settings in it
Code:
r1_dlights on
r1_dlights_clip 35.
r1_glows_per_frame 8
r1_lmodel_lerp 0.1
r1_pps_u -1.
r1_pps_v 0.
r1_ssa_lod_a 25.
r1_ssa_lod_b 25.
r1_tf_mipbias -3.000.
And it still isn't overly smooth.
The reason i'm asking wether it's ram or GPU causing the choppyness is because i can quite easily get a RAM upgrade, GPU is a little harder to get.

I finished stalker on my bottom of the line system ;)
p1.8
1gig ram
9800pro
Static lighting, fairly far draw distance, grass slightly reduced, fps consistent 800 or 1024. At times it gets choppy when the dust particle wind picks up in cordon or when I overload my carrying capacity. It's playable, but time for a new system fosho :p

I have 9800pro too, 1.5gb RAM. Frame rate is good with static lighting, BUT often incomprehensible "jerks" hinder gameplay and enjoyment very much :( No matter what graphics options are set. BTW, all owners of 9x Radeons notes this AFAIK. I wonder if it's old Radeons only trait or newer Radeons also suffer from strange chopiness in static lighting mode?

Stuttering is quite common even on better configurations. This is more or less an issue of many current first person games which continuously load new large areas during gameplay
The type of lighting used has impact only on the the framerate, while size of the textures is the primary cause of the stuttering - either somebody has small video memory (128 for 9800 Pro I guess) or RAM - but that wouldn't be your case.
For comparison I have 7600GT 256DDR3 and 1GB single channel RAM, page file optimally set to 2048GB and I get a lot of annoying stuttering in first 5-10 minutes of gameplay when I'm using 75 % textures. If I play the level longer, it slightly improves. Larger textures also make loading times longer, even with noprefetch tweak. It also depends on the particular area, Pripyat has many buildings which need to be covered with textures, while open meadows in other areas aren't as stressful for the video memory.
However I think 256DDR3 should handle 75% textures without bigger trouble and it would be worth seeing if it didn't stutter so much if I added one more GB RAM. But if you have 1,5GB RAM and still get a lot of stuttering it may suggest that it wouldn't improve much for me. However, your Radeon with 128MB can eventually drag down the advantage of your bigger RAM, so I don't know...
In any case, try using 50% or lower quality textures and then I think you shouldn't get as much stuttering as before - but it will never be completely eliminated.

6800s featuring 256-bit interface should theoretically give a decently playable performance on medium settings, that would of course depend on the rest of configuration. I still have my old 6600GT waiting for a bargain sale, perhaps I should try it out for fun with Stalker... but uh, if I remember how it sucked in Oblivion, better not.

No, in Stalker the stutterng is very strange on R9x (at least on R9x). Framerate is good but even when you don't move the jerks appear from nowhere, and they are quite unpleasant, not like in other games when a game loads part of a map. Here it's like 0.5-2 sec when game freezes entirely, and this may repeat every 3-10 seconds for quite a long time. I have no such problem at all with the same setup playing Gothic3 with dynamic lighting and all shader 2.0 effects - it's smoother, even in Myrthana's forests. Pity, because otherwise I like Stalker's graphics (especially architecture complexity) even in static lighting mode.
BR796164, is the stuttering with 256Mb card like I described it above?
D'Arcy on 9/5/2007 at 11:16
My card has 512M, and I also get stuttering from time to time. But it only happens when I move, not when I'm standing still. Especially, the stuttering seems to occur more often when I run.
Bjossi on 9/5/2007 at 11:18
I get stuttering always at the exact same spots. When I'm about to enter the Duty area after coming from either Wild Territory or Military Warehouses, I get a freeze that lasts for almost 10 seconds. It is damn annoying, and is not the only long freeze I get.
