The only fan patch I used was "bardak's bug fix attempt" for stashes and real weapon names mostly, and clean 1.0004 was fully stable and not particularly buggy for me too.

I patched to 1.004. The only mod I used was the unlimited mission time mod (god that time limit was STUPID). I have had zero bugs or performance problems in the 15 + hours I have put into the original STALKER>

I use two mods in SoC: Repair mod, and Real gun names. I don't think I've had a bug in the game since 1.0004 came out.
