do you get a proper x-ray shutdown message ?
I get a message that says: "A crash has been detected by bugtrap." Then there was all this gibberish listed under "Exception Reason:"
XR_3DA.exe caused BREAKPOINT in module "c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\stalker shadow of chernobyl\bin\xrCore.dll" at 001B:00597CB5, xrDebug::backend()+165 byte(s)
I've already re-installed the game twice and Steam has verified that all the game files are present. No issues there. What do you think?

I have very similar setup to yours and had lots of irregular crashes in random places at the beginning. Not too bad, but annoying enough. If you haven`t yet, try starting from scratch with (
http://www.tweakguides.com/STALKER_1.html) TweakGuides, it`s the best. After reading it, installing float and messing with Ati Tray Tools i`ve managed to get it to "pretty stable" - crash per week or two.
If really desperate, get a used box copy from amazon - dirt cheap - it might be Steam`s version fault.

Thanks for the suggestion dexterward. I'll let you know how it goes.
