I downloaded the steam version of the game a while ago when it was on sale -- just decided to install it today. Epic fail. The game loads fine, but takes a big shit as soon as I leave the area surrounding the bunker. The screen goes yellow and crashes to the desktop. This no sense makes. I have great sys specs (c2d 3ghz 2gb ram and a 5770) and just played DX HR with no problems. So, I'm beat.
Before you chide me, yes I did try searching the forums, but I haven't found anything to help me solve this problem. If anyone has any solutions at all, please present them. I've adjusted the video settings to nil, and it still crashes at identical points. I really appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks!

I am assuming you mean these forums? Or GSC? And do you mean Shadow of Chernobyl and Sidorovich's bunker?
I would say your best bet is to look (
http://www.gsc-game.com/main.php?t=community&s=forums&s_game_type=xr&sec_id=12) here, especially at the stickies. Dunno if you have already tried that. Sorry, but haven't encountered this bug before. Sounds like a shader problem tbh, but there's no telling unless you post the crash log.

Haha, yes! I mean any forums. Even general google searches haven't yielded positive results. I am referring to SOC and Sidorovich's bunker. It happens at the beginning of the game -- sometimes I get to speak to the leader, and sometimes the game crashes before then. It's always the same yellow screen and then computer comes to a halt. I don't need to restart windows, but I do have to exit the program. I don't get it. My computer handles everything I throw at it. No problems. If it is shader issue like you suggest, then toning down the graphic settings should work, but it doesn't. I'm going to reinstall it and post an update later today EDT. Thanks for the link Vernon!

The steam version is all patched up I take it.
The GSC forum guys are recommending putting on float32. Wasn't that incorporated into patches at some point? Or is the separate version still updated and slightly ahead of the curve?

Thanks for the suggestions! I didn't try Float32, but I have been using Stalker Complete 2009, which has made the game playable; however, I still get "crash to desktops" at random intervals. It's the same scenario as above the game just lasts longer before it starts chugging and then (boom!) yellow screen and crash. I'm starting to give up hope!

I'm no expert at this, but I wonder if it is worth monitoring the temperatures of your hardware as you play.
Stalker, despite its awesomeness, is still horribly optimised and I very much doubt uses your system assets as efficiently as DXHR. Heck, it could be completely wrong, but based on the variable length of time before crashes, overheating seems possible - might be worth checking it, just to rule it out. Maybe. Possibly.

DXHR does not even have dynamic lightning, you can't compare it to STALKER

@ANTSHODAN - I thought my video card was overheating as well, but the game only crashes to the desktop it never locks up the PC. That makes me think it's software related.
@mothra - The game does run very smoothly for a good 10 to 15 minutes before crashing. During that time, I get minor dips in the frame rate, but nothing that would indicate that my system can't handle it. Not to mention that the game still crashes even when using static lighting. I've never had this problem with any game. Ever.
It's very frustrating.

btw, float32 is no longer being developed and complete or other "super"-mods already use their own set of custom shaders, it is no longer needed. do you get a proper x-ray shutdown message ? if the engine crashes it should produce a little debug info in a popup window. if not, try enabling a dump log in windows and read the system eventlog after a crash, maybe it says what caused it. another thing would be to validate the stalker files via steam or reinstall it.
