S.T.A.L.K.E.R. gets a graphics upgrade (unoffical) - by bikerdude

I was actually speaking with the author tonight, and he told me there should be another version released soon that will include ambient occlusion.
Now, I don't have the slightest idea what ambient occlusion is, but I do know that I installed this thing tonight and noticed a distinct improvement in my frame rates, confirmed by rs_stats. The visual differences are more difficult to pick out - they're "subtle," as he says - but I'd keep it around for the performance boost alone. This is definitely worth trying.

What is your problem with full dynamic lighting? Does it just refuse to run or do you just get poor frame rates? You could try defragging your HDDs if it's the latter.
As soon as I step out of the trader's place, I'm treated to the official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. slideshow.
De-fragging now.

It will be worth it if it stops the game from freezing for a few seconds every once in a while. I already get over 60 FPS average.

Wish my frame rate was that high... Has anyone else noticed a severe drop in fps in outdoor areas with lots of shadows with this mod, the warehouse with seriy and his men in garbage just before the entrance to agropom, for instance? When I'm inside the warehouse with all the shadows and whatnot my framerate seems to drop to horrible levels but they go back to normal again as soon as I get back outside.

I'm sorry, but now you got me confused... do you have a drop in the framerate indoors or outdoors?
I sometimes notice a small drop in the framerate when I'm outside. The vegetation is probably the culprit. But the mod didn't make it worse.

I get the drop when indoors on an outdoor map. The only place I've noticed it is in the warehouse in garbage where you help Seriy fight off the bandits. I haven't played enough with this mod to give any more examples but shadowy indoor maps like agropom run fine.

I definitely have more trouble with indoor maps as well, which I'd attributed to the increased complexity in lighting and shadows. The mod has definitely given me a performance increase in those areas as well, although there's still very clearly a difference between indoor and outdoor environments.

I take it you're already using the -noprefetch option at startup?

But my problem is not with indoor maps, they work fine. The only significant drop I have noticed with this mod has been inside the warehouse in garbage. Agropom underground, with all its pretty shadows, ran fine. This is as far as I have gotten with the mod installed, so I can't say anything about the rest of the game yet.
Hmm, looks like someone managed a sneaky edit...

Yes I am. It speeds up loading times, but those occasional freezes remain in my case.
