I've seen it at Walmart, Target, and Gamestop. Haven't been anywhere else, tbh. Best Buy can be hit or miss on new games - they don't even have Arma II listed on their website but I've seen it in two stores now.
The collector's edition doesn't seem to be similar to the ones released in other countries, and I suspect it's just a way of cranking up sales here. It's not bad, it's just nothing special - normal packaging, a tech tree poster, some stickers, and a map of the zone. Maybe there's some in-game bonus or something, but I'm too into ME2 right now to check it out.

I'm surprised. My first impression in CoP isn't so good.
There's no introduction to my pc at all, he was just standing there at the beginning. If he was inserted, at least do a cutscene or some kind of lead in.
The starting spot is also mighty ugly. CS did better in both of these areas.
But it's stalker so I'mma finish it, and will most likely enjoy it a lot.

Yes, presentation of the game is pretty bad.

Theres an intro movie explaining what happened in the first game and who you are/what your doing.
Don't know why it didnt play for you.

It did play for me. It did a pitiful job at connecting the fact sheet it was reading off of with my appearance in the zone. All of a sudden I'm just there holding an AK47, with no helicopter flying away or no abandoned motor vehicle.
Stalker had the death truck, CS had the emission and rescue, CoP has...nothing.

Dropping the player in cold was an unpatronizing thing to do. It doesn't have the same flourishes with regard to the character's own narrative. But the most interesting part of Stalker was never the player character. I find CoP more precise and tolerable for the decision to just hand the Zone to you.
Of course, it's always possible that it was just cheaper to drop a cinematic intro for a slideshow.

As I said a few pages back:

* I loved being thrown into the zone with only a character backstory, a vague goal and multiple destinations without any kind of hand-holding. This is the first sign you get -and a strong one- that GSC now have a deep understanding of what makes STALKER so attractive.
Funny how opinions about a single detail can differ eh. Bet you'll hate the ending as well then.

I don't think that a customary introductory lead-in is any indication of "what makes stalker so attractive." It's just a first impression before I even began to move. I mean yea, it's really about the player experience, but the narrative presentation's still important.
I was like wow, my body must've been standing here for a while, waiting for my soul to come down. There's no indication that I had traversed long distance to enter the zone. I needed something to anchor me into the gameworld, it could even be a guy that walks over and says a few words about what I've been doing. Otherwise I felt like I'd just spawned in mp and it was time to rack up some kills.

glad you're not making stalker
Jashin on 9/2/2010 at 07:58
hoho.
well, that's your opinion.
