I lose interest in HL precisely when I get to Xen. More than once, I've played through the game until I reach Xen, then give up. The BOTM was nowhere near as annoying as the Xen levels in HL.
Really? Why? I know you sort of alluded to an explanation but I mean most of HL (while entertaining) was pretty much standard and a bit tedious. Actually my interest started to rise as soon as I entered Lambda complex. The Xen levels had the sort of flare that woke me up and motivated me to see what was waiting for me at the end. The landscape too was kinda cool.
As for BOTM, the idea of crawling around in a fleshy body is pretty awesome. Nothing could be further from the familiar, except that you find familiar things inside....people, weapons, your old foes from the VB and Rick, and the contrast between the familiar and the unfamiliar was very refreshing. Made me happy :D

I'm probably one of the few that likes Xen, the idea of being in a different world is pretty cool and I enjoyed most of the levels, I did find the first part of Interloper pretty annoying though.
In other words, I find BotM more annoying than Xen.

Xen was a concentrate of everything that's obnoxious in an FPS: platforming even harder than in the Turok series, vortigaunts with autotargeting, alien grunts able to hit you around corners and cover, microscopic and almost invisible headcrabs, odd scripted boss fights, shortage of ammunition...
The Body of the Many's main reversals were swimming and endured exposings to radiations, plus it was a very brief stage. The last fight was a little cheaty on the side of the computer, with the unlimited rumblers, but I have seen far worse in the final level of Far Cry (an open arena with 20 rocket launchers against you, in a game based on jungle guerrilla).

I never really had a problem with either, minus the short section in Xen where you get shot out of an alien hole onto a flying purple manta ray into a teleporter. Now, the Engineering Deck vs Lambda Core, on the other hand... :nono:

I used the hornet gun frequently during Xen, the grunts will go down very quickly with the alt. fire, just strafe while it regenerates ammo. ;)
