Whatup shockers!
Got a little something for you guys to try.....a new ss2 wrench.
I had already redone the wrench mesh a while back but decided to finish it recently. Its still not FINISHED really. The textures need more work, esp the addition of blood stains. However, the world model and player model are fully functional and textured. Object collision works just like the old one did and from what i can tell there seem to be no technical issues. All the same this is still a beta. Expect a final release to follow at some point.
To install, simply unzip the archive into your mod-ready ss2 root directory and play. I would like as much feedback as possible of course. In particular let me know if you like the angular style of the wrench or if you think that it needs to be rounded like many household wrenches are. I kept the angularness partly to mimic the old model but mostly because I liked the style due to its added bluntness....but let me know how that sits with you.
Many thanks to Shadowspawn for his conversion tools and advice.
Thank you Nameless Voice for your software as well and your perpetual hand-holding while I fought with the arm model.
Finally thanks to Mr. ZB who continues to provide sound advice and support.

Sweet. When I was playing Polaris with the latest SHTUP installed, I was thinking that the wrench could have used a makeover as well. Definitely have to check this out.

How about some screenshots?

From hereforth thy name shall be Missus Bighead. And you shall strike upon our foes with a mighty headcrash.

Huh? de?
I was poking some mild fun at the proportions of this wrench. I checked out the second version in the game now.

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb237/Kolya33/dump004.jpgStill looks too toy-like. There's not much detail to the mesh, it's more or less a hammer with a split head. Or a tube and a cube. For example, the grey part doesn't work as being made from a different material because it's too obvious that it's just a texture. There is no seam or fissure between it and the yellow part. And boy is that a bright yellow. It looks like you just took it from it's shrink wrapping and then someone had a nosebleed. It should be dirty and worn where it's shiny and even. The embedded screw looks like decoration, disfunctional, the grey tongs don't look like they were movable parts. And I cannot imagine screwing anything open with this wrench, because the tongs are too fat and lack a corrugated grip on the inside.

Nice looking model, though I have to agree totally on its toy-like look. One thing I liked about the normal wrench model is its aged look, with large amounts of rust throughout.
Gota say I do like the new wrench model from Bioshock.

Anybody want to take a crack at the textures?
I can do something about the lower jaw to make it a distinct part. That shouldn't be too hard. As far as it being a cylinder and a cube I can make it look like a conventional wrench with a rounded head....i kept it angular to mimic the original's style...but just so you know, this model is ~1000 tris, I guess you just don't notice them because they are used mostly for fillets and a smooth shaft/handle, which doesn't look terribly impressive ingame as a person cannot resolve fine details from a distance and dark doesn't render them all perfectly anyway.
I am sorry for making a crappy wrench even worse but honestly the textures i used.....that's my very best effort. I need somebody skilled to assist because even if the mesh were perfect, the textures can easily spoil the whole thing.

I was going to make a big long post on this subject, but realized there's something I should ask first--
RocketMan, is your goal to make a faithful update of the original wrench, or to make a new, not necessarily the same wrench?
