alright interesting turn of events.
first i'd like to thank everyone for helping so far. now i feel like a compelte ass though.
turns out that it was never a problem with the mod procedure - it was a graphic problem the whole time. i know, feel free to kick me. see, when i said that SS2 works fine without the modding procedure, that was a bit of a lie. it would load fine into the opening videos and menu so i assumed that it was running ok. testing it further shows that isn't true. i had the 'd3d device doesn't accurately report texture memory usage' error. the solution was simple - place that 'safe texture mode' setting into the config file. for whatever reason, the driver seemed to be starting up differently after i did the mod procedure so that it wouldn't even start the game. stange, but a related problem.
and i'm happy to report that i even have ponterbee working now. well sort of. i'm not getting random lockups! AARRGG!! i'm betting that this is a more common error...anyone know the fix?
thanks again

If you have a dualcore or a Pentium processor with HT technology enabled, you just have to disable CPU1 in the Affinity options of the shock2.exe task in the Task Manager. It is possible to make the change permament, in the newest post of the top thread of this forum (it has over 800 posts in it), I wrote in ok detail on how to do that.

i did read that thread (or at least a good chunk of it) and that was one of the first things i did. i set affinity for SS2 to CPU0 and turned off affinity for CPU1. did not seem to help what so ever. i will try to make the change permanant as you say and see what happens.

so it seems i got it working alright now, turns out it was a dual core problem. why it didn't work the first time i'll never know. thanks to everyone for the help, it did get me on my way. also, sorry i did not recognize this for one (or two) of the already documented issues.
ponterbee is a wonderful fan campaign! somehow it feels like a cross between SS1 and 2 to me. don't ask how, but i love it so far! i definately wasn't expecting a bunch of voice logs. wonderful piece of work. only on the med/sci deck, but man it made me jump when you hear a shotgun blast and some guy scream his head off!
