hello everybody,
been browsing these forums for info for a while, but never bothered to post. so to everyone that has done all the work getting SS2 and especially SS1 running in xp, thank you;)
anyways, strange problem i'm having here. i have not yet isntalled SS2 on my new computer and just decided to give ponterbee a shot tonight. SS2 works fine stangely enough. then, i proceeded to make the game 'mod ready' as described in both the ponterbee readme and the SHTUP readme. for whatever reason, this breaks the game. i get a runtime error:
AppName: shock2.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.0 ModName: shock2.exe
ModVer: 1.0.0.0 Offset: 00117afe
i own the cd classics version so it is fully patched. i followed the mod directions exactly - move all .crf files into a new res folder and modify the install.cfg to point to that folder. after that, i start getting the error.
so here's where it gets strange. reversed the procedure and put everything back to how it should be at fresh install. it still doesn't work. now i'm scratching my head....anyone else run into this? i could really use a hand here. i took a browse through some of the other threads but couldn't find anything on this one.
for the record (in case its relevant) here's my system specs:
amd opteron 165 (dual core)
asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe mainboard
1x geforce 7900GTO 512mb
sound blaster x-fi xtrememusic
1x 250GB western digital sata hdd (SS2 installed here)
1x 80GB wester digital IDE hdd
LG 16x dvd rom
NEC DVD DL burner
enermax 535W power supply
and a partidge in a pear tree

Could you post the line(s) of the install.cfg after you changed them?

cd_path D:\
install_path C:\test\Sshock2
language english
resname_base C:\test\Sshock2\res+D:\shock
load_path C:\test\Sshock2+D:\shock
script_module_path C:\test\Sshock2+D:\shock
movie_path C:\test\Sshock2\cutscenes+D:\shock\cutscenes
the test folder is for testing purposes - so i didn't have to uninstall the original install. and by the way, i have also tried disabling the safedisc and even using a cracked exe (hey i own the thing, thats not illegal). using the 2000/xp SS2 patch has also been attempted.
thanks again.

Try editing it in wordpad.

Replace your install.cfg contents with
Code:
install_path .\
language english
resname_base .\res
load_path .\
script_module_path .\
movie_path .\cutscenes

Doesn't that only work in command-line/DOS? :erm:

There is an easier way to make SS2 mod ready. Have you tried installing Zombe's Mod Manager on a freshly installed System Shock 2 yet? Installing that program does all the file shifting and everything for you - It should work then.;)

GREAT NEWS! the mod manager screwed my SS2 install again! YAY!
ok thats bad news, i just felt like being a jerk. i've also tried the medium install instead of the full. no difference. thanks for the help so far guys, i'll have to work on this more in a couple hours. need to do some work on my car.

For info GarrettLoader can set up your SS2 install to be mod ready for Ponterbee.
