I am trying to run SS2 on Windows 7 with an nVidia 8800GT. I have installed the game, stock, and run the SS2Tool with all of the fixes and stuff. When i run SS2 in Win98 compatibility mode and as admin, the intro video plays (or played the first time i ran it) and i get to the main menu. at this point i can start a new game, where it successfully plays the other intro video. after the intro, it goes to the loading screen, but when it is done loading, the screen goes completely black and unresponsive. Looking at the shock2.exe process in task manager shows that it is taking 50% CPU (so probably 100% of one of the cores).
does anyone know how to get around this issue? i have heard success stories about Win Vista and 7, so i know someone out there has made it work.
Thanks!

Take off the 98 compatibility mode and try it. That's known to cause problems.

I have this exact issue. If I try running the game without any compatibility modes on the game crashes, otherwise just black screen. So annoying. Though I`ve not installed the indeo codec drivers yet, so I had assumed that that was the cause.

Thanks for the input, but like icemann, the game will not run at all without the compatibility mode on. can it still be an indeo codec problem if the videos play, but the came crashes when it is finished loading?

I was able to get in-game with XP SP2 compatability mode, but now i have no sound in-game. There is sound in the intro video, but none when i get into the game. Any tips for that?

Well for me I installed the indeo codec drivers and followed the driver registration directions from over at strangebedfellows and I can now atleast watch the videos in windows media player, but I still get the black screen of death whenever I try and get to any part of the game that has a video playing in it, be it the intro or otherwise. Just blackscreen and I have to alt+tab and close the program down.
I`ve tried the majority of the compatibility modes, tried reinstalling then re-running the latest version of the ss2Tool program, but nope that didn`t fix it.
Has me completely at a loss as to what to do to fix it. I even tried for fun putting a random avi movie in the folder and renaming it to the intro files file name but nope still black screen.
Anything else I can try?
[edit]
After reading further info at strangebedfellows I tried renaming my lgvid.ax file and I can now atleast get into the game. Music and sound works fine from my tests. Just those annoying movies not working. Grrr.

Is this Win 7 64 bit or 32? I did the folder copy version of an "install" and then used SSTool on my 7/64 system. It runs, but I get no sound or cut scenes.

32 bit for me. Sound and music work fine. Though I sometimes have sound issues where all main sound effects suddenly switch to only coming out of my front speaker (I use a 5.1 surround system) at random. However I tried switching positional audio to 3/4 to the left and the bottom audio bar 3/4 to the right with sound channels on max and it worked fine on my last test.
Now to go play Ancient then try and fix this movie issue.
