Sorry if it's been mentioned.. I did look around..
So has anyone managed it? Alt+Enter doesn't work, adding -w or -window to the shortcut doesn't work, changing "game_full_screen 1" to "game_full_screen 0" in the cam.cfg doesn't work..
I've also tried the programs 3D Analyze and DXWnd to force windowed mode, to no avail. If anyone knows how I can get it to work I'd be greatful, the game is blocky enough without being stretched over a 1680x1050 widescreen :(

Okay got it, kinda. The game runs in fullscreen but at the correct resolution with lovely black borders around the edge, which is still miles better than what it was before.
In case it helps anyone else, what I did was go into the control panel for my graphics card and untick the "scale image to panel size" option. The card is an ATi Mobility Radeon X600 (laptop, wooo) with display driver version 8.143-050607a-020515C.
This has saved a lot of games for me :)

Why do you want to run it windowed?

Like I said, the game looks ugly when it's stretched to my native resolution, and I like to be able to switch between apps as I play games. It's sorted now anyway :)

That is a pretty smart move in any old game, I have to admit, though it would take time getting used to see the desktop while playing. :o
But as far as I know there is no way to run SS2 properly windowed without modifying the game's code (yes, in it's compiled form).

You can run SS2 in window by using this little utility: (

Unfortunately its main language is japanese. But you can modify its settings by opening hook.ini-file in your favourite text editor.

LCDs for the lose.
Bjossi on 6/3/2007 at 16:55
Widescreen LCDs for the lose, since the game supports 1600 x 1200.

And 1280x1024...
And 1024x768 for the really old LCDs.
etc
Ah well, having the old LCD vs CRT debate yet again is always fun, right?

Why do people always connect max res with age? My 15" monitor is just 2 years old.
