ss2 vs. deus ex - by xerxes2044

Oh, the "action = intense music" doesn't anger me, in fact I find it really helpful sometimes. It's just that it wasn't that good in DX -- neither the ACTION MUSIC nor the Okay Everything's Cool Again music.
Again, this is only what I think. I doubt very much whether I could create or even suggest much of an improvement, so this is all armchair and subjective on my part and I take no real issue with anyone who thinks otherwise.
NV's point about listening to the choons outside of the game is a very good one, as well. I used to play the original Unreal tunes (most of them) all the time as background music, and I still use Anachronox and Grim Fandango for just general listening. But, like NV said about SS2, I don't think the DX music works very well outside of the gameplay. It's just not what I'd choose to listen to.
That said, I don't listen to the SS2 music outside of gameplay, either.
It is at this point that astute readers will begin to formulate the opinion that I'm probably not making any sense to anyone other than myself.

There are some truly wonderful tracks in DX, not the least of which is the opening theme -- but there are also huge swaths of bullshit, like the nightclub music in Hong Kong
If it were good, it wouldn't be authentic nightclub music.

I'm trying to think of another example of the good music in DX, and I'm blanking out a bit.
I found both the Area 51 tracks to be pretty memorable. First the blood-pumping music when Jock drops you off, then the spooky-eerie track when you get into the depths of the underground complex.
All that being said, lately I've been listening to the Star Control 2 soundtrack.

I will say that it was trippier than the music in any of the real nightclubs I spend time in - and of about the same quality - but somehow... authentic ain't the word I'd use. :p

Just wondering - I haven't gotten far in my replaying yet this week - what tracks would you say strayed into "rock"?
The closing credits music was a nice parting slap in the face. There were a couple of instances in the 'action' music too, which people may never hear. Start a fight in the bar in New York perhaps, actually the regular bar music might fit the bill. Anything where faux guitar rears its ugly head :p

In a world full of Grim Fandango, Anachronox, NOLF, and probably ten or twenty others, how can you say such a thing? :(
Yes! Anachronox's music, not to mention the game, is amazing!! I listen to it regularly.

I'm not going to compare the two games since I haven't completed SS2 yet.
What I can say though is that the soundtrack from Deus Ex is awesome. Like someone else in this topic said, the intro music with the DX logo cutting to the main menu is one of my favourite parts, and I don't think the music sounds cheesy or anything.
I also like the UNATCO HQ music, now that I think of it. It's got this calming effect on me (which is welcome in between intense missions).

wow i forgot i even made this thread until a few minutes ago. i didnt think itd get this much attention.
anyway, i wholeheartedly agree with the guy that said that the paris music was krapp. it seemed something suitable for castlevania or something like that...it was just very strange. i also agree with those who say the title music was corny as hell, because it just sounded like generic pc game music that seemed to tell the player "youre the hero." blech
i didnt mind the nightclub music so much cause well..it was a nightclub so i found it suitable.
what i REALLY hate about DX is how every time youd come across hostiles, the music would change into a "time to fight" sort of thing. i found that so frickin' annoying. i know there are different tunes for different levels when you engage enemies....i think the second engagement track pissed me off the most. i forget when you begin to encounter that music.
and honestly, only the first 15 - 20 seconds of the MJ12 underground facility music was any good. the rest was eh.

and another thing about DE - am i the only one that was pissed off when the three endings to deus ex and their respective outcomes were posted in the objectives screen prior to you actually completing any of them? that sorta killed the whole purpose of actually beating the game. for me anyway. i just played through DE again about a month ago, and once i got to that point in the game i just stopped playing. what a turn off.
..
p.s. ss2 rules, lol :P
