ss2 vs. deus ex - by xerxes2044

There's a vast difference between "don't prefer" and "totally sucks ass".
Aside from not sucking ass, another nice thing about DX's music is that there's so much more of it.

Yeah I think DX's music is pretty crappy too. The tunes are mostly ok in themselves but the tracker sound set he's using is incapable of reproducing it very well. In Unreal it all worked great, in DX its severely over stretched (and, sorry Alex, the DX soundtrack strayed fatally into "Rock" as well, where it should never have tread. I'm sure there's some people who like that stuff but they must also defend that song from the old Transformers movie, "The Touch", to the death and still have their old vynil Ah Ha records too).
Deus Ex is kinda caught in the shadow of newer tech for both graphics and sound on its release. It's a bummer they couldn't move on to something newer for the music. The music in Invisible War is awesome.

Meh.. I like 'em both. However, SS2 is probably the better of the pair.

Jangly, strident, two-layered tracker music doesn't compare to what SS2 has sorry. Now there are a few tracks that get it right like Liberty Island, Lebedev Airfield and Hong Kong but most of the rest are subpar and all over the place, doesn't detract from the gameplay experience imo but welp.

I still remember laughing when the DX theme started because it sounded corny. But after a while I started liking it as something familiar. I like most all the tracks as part of the game, esp the ones TF mentioned, but not really outside of that.
The theme from SS2, on the other hand, is so awesome that I keep a fan rip (hosted somewhere here on TTLG) on my computer and just play it in the background sometimes (except for one awful loud part I toned down).

Just wondering - I haven't gotten far in my replaying yet this week - what tracks would you say strayed into "rock"?
And hey, Ah-ha man! Taaaake onnnn meeee!
... god I am so gay. :erm:

The
inconsistency of DX's music is what makes it inferior to SS2's, in my view. There are some truly wonderful tracks in DX, not the least of which is the opening theme -- but there are also huge swaths of bullshit, like the nightclub music in Hong Kong (the majority of the music in Hong Kong, actually, but the nightclub is just laaaaaaaaaaame) and the truly uninspired and uninspiring Paris stuff.
I'm trying to think of another example of the good music in DX, and I'm blanking out a bit. I seem to remember the UNATCO music (the "downtime between missions" tunes) being pleasant, but mostly it's all a case of "ONO SOMETHING IS HAPPENING QUICK MAKE THE EXCITING MUSIC GO oh wait it stopped go back to the regular ambients" -- and all exceptionally predictable. As well as mostly mediocre.

Deus Ex has one of the best computer game soundtracks I've ever heard.
Jesus Christ. In a world full of Grim Fandango, Anachronox, NOLF, and probably ten or twenty others, how can you say such a thing? :(

The music in Invisible War is awesome.
The problem with Invisible War's music - and that of a lot of modern games, actually - is that the music is designed completely as background music. Some of the IW tracks are decent, once I'm listening to them outside of the game, but I must say I hardly noticed them ingame because even at high volume they were played too quietly to make them anything more than background ambience.
Anachronox also has good music, though I prefer DX. I have both soundtracks in my playlist.
Haven't played the other two.
To me, a the techno music from SS2 just doesn't work outside the game, probably because I wouldn't listen to that sort of music normally. The slower 'creepy' pieces on the other hand...

NOLF
I agree that NOLF's music's great, but surely it's got the same kind of "ONO SOMETHING IS HAPPENING QUICK MAKE THE EXCITING MUSIC GO oh wait it stopped go back to the regular ambients" problems that you seemed so angered by in DX? :p

The pacing of the music between normal and action sequences has nothing to do with the quality of the music.
