SS2 upgraded and virtualized? (with vmware) etc.. - by ceno

A few days ago I came across my SS2 game collecting dust in a box so I decided to take another journey through the game. Apparently over the years there have been quite a few user made upgrades to the game. (only one I knew of back in the day was the SHTUP.
After a very long read through the forums/googling every patch, update etc I needed to get SS2 running on XP, downloading any graphic upgrades and mods etc I wanted. I realized even tho the time and effort was very much worth it, I found it was a royal pain in the you know what. :cheeky:
I'm still in the process of getting all this installed. So far I've added the SHTUP files, applied the official patch, updated with the xp fix. I still want to update with the "rebirth complemented" upgrade, Straylight ADaoB fixes, widescreen support fix, shmup upgrade, DeepFriedBeer sound upgrade etc. Basically anything that makes the game look and sound as good as possible while keeping the gameplay original. (no weapon mods etc).
Can the rebirth complemented mod and True Redux mod be used at the same time or will they clash with each other?
So far this has been a LOT of work that I really don't want to have to do a second time around. So I wanted to virtualize all this work with vmware's thinstall app. Has anyone attempted this before with any success? If so, what are the steps to accomplishing this task?
I could also use some help updating the game with the upgrades. I've downloaded so many files, fixes, patches, mods that my folder is a HUGE mess atm. At times I've got so many files on the go trying to update the game I lose track of where things are, what files I need to update first, what I've already updated, what upgrades will work with other ones and what ones will clash. :(
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Maybe if someone who has some time and expertise (that I don't have) could write up a small "how-to" steps to upgrading the game. Thanks for reading.

The first thing you should do is make a separate folder for all mods and then inside that, make one folder for each mod. That'll keep everything nice and tidy. Secondly, you need to make your SS2 installation mod-ready. There are instructions in the SHTUP readme on how to do this. Thirdly, you should consider using the (
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,527.0.html) SS2 Mod Manager, as it can quickly and easily install and uninstall mods and FMs for you. Plus, it'll tell you which mods conflict with each other. If you don't do this, you should at least keep a record in Notepad or the like of which mods you have installed (I did this before SS2MM was made more versatile, and it worked well for me).
Oh, and I don't think either the Widescreen mod or DDFix are compatible with SS2MM, but I can't check right now (class is about to start :p)

I think they are, widescreen mod is at least.

Both the widescreen mod and DDFix work perfectly with SS2 and the mod manager.
Have VMWare improved its support of DirectX 3D graphics? It was unusably slow the last time I looked at it.

Okay. I wasn't sure about the mod manager.

Shouldn't have any affect, since all the mod manager does is launch Shock2.exe.

I thought the widescreen fix wouldn't work on copies of System Shock that have CD protection.....
