... it sounds like we might end up with yet another, potentially incompatible version of the game to add to the confusion.
Really, I doubt this will be a problem. Just sumo slam the NewDark executable on top of whatever they've cobbled together. Done.

if not, pretty sure a conversion tool will be made quite swiftly - just like that tool that converts the 2012 digital release of final fantasy 7 back into the original 1998 format for the sake of mod compatibility.
anyway, they've mentioned in the interview that old mods will be compatible, and that pretty much means the resource format will remain untouched, and that's all we need.

I wake up, do my normal routine, randomly decide to check GoG, and what's this? IS IT REALLY TRUE??
I could barely contain my excitement. I mean, I've had my original copy maintained as well as a backup image on my hard drive for quite some time now, so I've never had a problem playing it. But to know that finally, FINALLY the game can be legitimately distributed again to all these people I've been telling for years that SS2 is my favorite game... coming back here was the first thought I had to share the news, but obviously I've been beaten to the punch. It's great to see all the old familiar names again!

...GoG...
I swear to GoD, it's like some sort of mimetic virus.

I'm curious who will get money from these sales, and if anyone actually involved in the development of the game will see any of it.

I love you too.

It annoys me that GOG handwaved any and all fan mods as "not quite perfect", didn't mention Newdark at all, and then said their "techninjas" swatted all remaining bugs.
It's possible that Le Corbeau got in touch with Irrational Games and the GOG version is based on their work, but if GOG worked straight from Irrational's source code, there is no way in hell their patch will have all the bugs squashed. They'll have fixed the multicore bug and the movie bug, it'll be playable, but they won't have extended the engine limits like Newdark's author did.

Unless I've missed it we don't know what patches it contains or how they've done it - at least until later today. My guess is that it will be similar to Thief in containing ddfix and if so that shouldn't cause any problems with someone who wants the enhanced limits from installing newdark just as needs to be done with original CDs.
If they have been in touch with the newdark author that would be very interesting but if not it could cause problems in future if they were seen to be profiting from someone's work without their permission.

They won't. Current copyright owners have nothing in common with the developers. If you take into account the fact that you'll still need to install NewDark and mods on that version, any reason to buy it again eludes me.

not needing to buy an used copy for $30-100 (or search abandonware networks for a patchable copy) is a pretty good reason.
