Time to edit the question mark out of the thread title.

Rambourg: There are some user-made mods out there which do phenomenal work on the game's stability, but none of them were quite perfect, so we took the game to our expert techninjas to analyse and swat the remaining bugs. It was some work to get it done, but as this is a game that we've wanted to release for four-plus years, it was also definitely a labour of love.
Kick: This release is the original version in all its glory. Fans will be able to apply the mods they know and love, and hopefully we may see some new mods from the community in the future.

What exactly will Night Dive Studios do?
probably nothing. I suspect that it has been created with the sole purpose of giving the guy enough credibility to get the rights from Meadowbrook, so he could get into the deal with GOG. this is probably not going to make him the richest man on the planet, but I'm pretty confident that he will get all his investments back plus a nice bonus. smart guy.

I don't think it's what Night Dive Studios did with the game itself so much as what they've done (or specifically, what Mr. Kick's done) to wrangle the rights together for the release. That by itself was an extraordinary accomplishment.
This Stephen Kick fella mustered the will and perseverance to accomplish what I'm sure many people in this community for years have dreamed about accomplishing.
The interview suggests the "expert techninjas" at GOG did much of the compatibility patching and packaging, but I'm still curious to see if they did anything more than just apply and configure NewDark. I don't care if that's all they did; I'm sure everyone here and the mysterious dev(s) behind NewDark don't really care either. I'm just curious to see if GOG or Night Dive did anything new and noteworthy to SS2 that isn't already provided by NewDark.

Unless they themselves developed newdark, I don't think they did much. I'm betting they're just using DDFix.
Anyway, does anyone know where the money goes besides GOG's cut?

part from it will surely go to the night dive studios (meadowbrook is probably out of the game by now). they seem to suggest that they have done substantial improvements to the game compatibility, that might mean that Eidos has let them use that complete source code that has been found by one of the original devs a couple of years ago (and turned over to Eidos with the hope of seeing an official release. their lawyer team is considering it even today I'm sure - and they will be considering indefinitely as long as they are being paid for it, I bet). if that's the case, Eidos will be getting a cut as well.

@twist: You're right, it is an accomplishment and I'm not trying to diminish that. I was trying to point out through my quote that they've probably modified the game themselves. (i.e. not using a third party patch.) They say you can still use community mods though, so I took that to mean that they didn't include any of them(like "newdark"), but that the game should be compatible with them.

I have to say that I really don't like the sound of their "techninjas" labouring to make the game work on modern systems when we already have NewDark. Assuming they're not the people who made NewDark (which seems unlikely, as GOG don't use it for Thief as far as I know), then it sounds like we might end up with yet another, potentially incompatible version of the game to add to the confusion.
