There were no "tech ninjas" - the release is a community prepared version of the game with the unofficial newdark patch. It's great that the game is available due to negotiations by Night Dive and GOG but there was little technical changes by them that I can see.

Well okay, so I guess what they said was a lie or something, because that was from the Rock Paper Shotgun interview IIRC. In any case, yes, it's fantastic that it's on GOG.

As has been mentioned several times in this thread already, the RPS interview is an outright lie. They said all the community mods weren't good enough, and that they'd sent in their "expert techninjas", while at the same time taking the community mods and giving their authors no credit.
For bonus points, the few tweaks their techninjas actual did mostly broke things, like disabling the intro.

I don't think their intention was to lie outwardly, more like they were just trying to look cool and create as much hype as possible, and made a poor choice of words (that backfired slightly). anyway, it looks like they will make things right, so no more grumbling is necessary, I would say.

I suspect it's unfair to suggest that packaging and uploading were the extent of their efforts. I'm willing to believe that GOG has put considerable efforts over the years into acquiring this particular license (despite them not coming to fruition). And while it eventually fell into their lap, I'm sure they still needed to ensure that all the 't's were crossed and the 'i's dotted in the legal sense at the very least. They have to playtest everything as well, of course (although playing SS2 is hardly an ordeal :)
In short, I think every game on GOG entails work at their end; but regardless of how much work any given game requires, every title they offer is a result of them putting in a tremendous amount of hard work convincing DRM-entrenched publishers to have anything whatsoever to do with them in the first place. Given the prevailing attitudes of the time, it's slightly miraculous that GOG exists and is successful, and gamers world-wide now reap the benefits, so I think they've earned their support (even if the SS2 release was a bit of a mess from our perspective).

agreed.

I just noticed that the GOG release still hasn't been mentioned on (
http://sshock2.com/) sshock2.com. C'mon now, seriously?
sNeaksieGarrett on 11/3/2013 at 20:08
We also still don't have word on changes to the game card on gog.com.
voodoo47 on 11/3/2013 at 20:47
they have added a note that the game has been patched to 2.4, and changed the info about multiplayer (up to 4 player to up to 3 players). the next build will have the acknowledgements in the readme, I assume.

Oh, my mistake. Easily overlooked, but I didn't look very thoroughly. However from what I see it says "up to two players." However, I was thinking there was going to be a post in this thread too.
