Man, I was pretty surprised to see that grabbing a used copy of SS2 off of Amazon or Ebay is going to cost you like $30-40 minimum. This is a pretty drastic difference from Thief 1/Gold/2, which can be had in many places for under $5. In light of that, the GOG deal is pretty awesome.
Also kind of surprised to see many here talking about buying the GOG version - not because they shouldn't - but doesn't everyone here pretty much have a copy already? :weird:

it's just so convenient to have the installer at hand at any time.
Hollow Man on 18/2/2013 at 15:45
For whatever reason, back in the day, I never picked up the game, even when it dropped in price and was sold as a budget title. I finally broke down and got a used copy five years (or so) ago. I paid $40 or $50, for the large box, with all inserts.
So the gog.com deal is clearly the way to go if you don't have the game. And as voodoo47 said, it's convenient to be able to easily download/install the game at any time.
EDIT: Apparently I paid $75 for it, 4 years ago. So yeah, uh, the gog.com version. :)

Well, this is great news. I'm glad to see Thiev/TheEnigmaticT addressing us with our concerns. Also, it looks like most of our blame on GOG was unfounded and should have been directed towards Night Dive Studios.
@Brethren: In my case, I've already got a copy and don't plan on buying a GOG version, but I've used GOG in the past and I think it's great nonetheless it is there. Should I ever want a digital copy of SS2 I know I can now get it from GOG.

Dear TheEnigmaticT,
I think you should consider all the suggestions above - for your convenience, I collected them for you:
* Kolya's EULA change suggestion: "Change the part in your EULA for System Shock 2 that disallows to "alter, modify, or adapt the Program" where "the Program" is earlier defined to include "computer software and any associated media, printed materials, and/or “online” or electronic documentation (collectively, the “Program”)" - Because that disallows your customers to use mods."
* Kolya's suggestion: "Acknowledge on SS2's GOG game card that your game "includes game version 2.4" to avoid version confusion and give credit to Systemshock.org for the SS2Tool"
* Enable intro. (Read above on how to do that.)
* Besides crediting mod authors, somehow credit the mysterious hacker too (for New Dark). Maybe go with icemann's suggestion: "For me atleast, reading on GOG giving credit to hackers would be poetic justice to the series as a whole given its story. "Hacked in to the 21st Century" would be an awesome line to go with it and would give credit where it's due + give satisfaction to us the fans who made sites like this (TTLG, systemshock.org etc) possible." - or just use "Le Corbeau".
* My suggestion: "I suggest you to include SHTUP as an optionally downloadable extra, I guess this is a mod that many players would be glad for; but it's likely that most of your buyers don't even know about it. And somewhere there is a remastered version of the cs2.avi cutscene which is also awesome, I'd also include that! (I think this is it.) Also it would be awesome to link to TTLG & systemshock.org to let people know where they can get even more mods."
Anyway, why don't you trust someone from the modding community to build an awesome release? I think it would be more efficient, because they know the Dark engine by heart; while you only seem to have some limited knowledge. Probably you'd forget about stuff or leave some errors.
Moreover, I'm still concerned about the missing source code of the New Dark engine, and it is still unclear how could you use it. I think it would really worth to hear Night Dive Studios about this to enlighten us. Would you invite them to the forum too?
And again, thanks for your awesomeness that you could finally release SS2! It's a big step in the franchise's history! :thumb: I also hope it opens up the future of SS! :)
I think I'll send this message in PM too to ensure you get it - sorry for the redundancy. Thought I guess it would be better if you answered here. :)
Regards,
MegaBrutal

I'm planning on purchasing the GOG.com version for two reasons:
1) Easy install without the need to troubleshoot inevitable problems
2) To show support for this game and GOG's efforts
It's exciting when new generations can enjoy something we all cherished!
Bjossi on 4/3/2013 at 17:12
What were GOG's efforts other than packaging the product and uploading on their website? The Thief/SS2 community updated the engine and game assets, and the dude at Night Dive worked on getting distribution rights. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
voodoo47 on 4/3/2013 at 21:44
the engine has been updated by le Corbeau. his relations to the community, night dive or GOG are unknown. apart from that, yeah, you are pretty much right.
sNeaksieGarrett on 4/3/2013 at 21:47
I thought I read that GOG had sent it to their "tech ninjas" and modified it further from what Night Dive had given them, unless I am missing/misunderstanding something here. I'm not talking huge changes, but little tweaks in addition to what had been handed to them I guess.
