Take this with a huge grain of salt, it's just a rumor right now. But there are claims that SS2 will appear on GOG.com soon, with a Steam release to follow later.

It's just SS2 for now. No SS1 in sight.
One thing I found interesting is mention that the version of SS2 being released is a "port". Meaning what, exactly? Did they just do the minimum to get SS2 running on modern machines, or more than that? I doubt they used any NewDark code. In fact, if anything, this release may complicate patching the game with NewDark.

it's no secret that they were trying hard to get the rights, so fingers crossed. as for complicating the patching, it does not really matter what they do with the executable as NewDark replaces that, so unless they are going to encrypt/mess up the resources, it should be ok.

That'd be nice, and it sounds legit. I wonder whether someone managed to buy the IP from the fund that owned it until now, or whether those Night Dive studios are directly licenced by them. Hopefully, SS1 could follow.

NewDark isn't technically a patch, it's a complete replacement of the main executable. So no, it's unlikely that anything will complicate applying it.

In the past, GOG has released a few games with modern patches and fixes applied- Independence War, for example, comes with a glide wrapper so it'll actually run on modern machines.
I wouldn't be surprised if they released a patched-up version of SS2 with the multiplayer, cutscene, and multi-core fixes already packaged in.

What exactly will Night Dive Studios do?
Is there anything more to do other than apply and configure NewDark and package it for the masses?
Is that what they're getting paid to do or will there be more to this re-release?
Potential cynicism aside, it will be great to see System Shock 2 become more accessible to people who don't lurk places like TTLG.
