Even more so: didn't the gate to hell open because of a failed teleportation experiment? :weird:
Not really. Betruger took the soul cube into hell without consent, which presumably caused the teleporter to destabilize and allow demons to pass through it. It wasn't an experiment and it didn't fail.

That's the rewritten plot for Doom 3.
The original Doom plot was a teleportation experiment IIRC.
And there were definitely no silly Soul Cubes involved.

Of course not very similar, one is human-worm flesh reshaped the other is an alien world in another dimension.
But most good games seem to go ape shit with weird and crappy final levels/areas/ideas so maybe you will find some more games with a similar crazy stuff in the end but is it not the same.
One similar area and repeated quite a few times can be found in the game Prey.

It highly unlikely that System Shock 2 copied any ideas from a game that came out a year before. It was already in production when HL came out - do you think that Irrational hadn't even written the BOTM part of the game yet? They were just playing HL one night and said "Hey! We can base the ending levels of SS2 loosely on Xen". (Not to mention that SS2 focuses highly on something called "the Many" which comes to an amazing climax in the BOTM. The explanation for that level began waaaaayyyyy earlier in the game). Xen is nothing like BOTM. Xen was annoying, with all that jumping and what not. The BOTM on the other hand was just plain tough. Nasty critters everywhere.
Seriously, retail games are planned a lot earlier in advance than you may think.

Imho there's only one major similarity between Half-Life 1 and System Shock 2. Both of them are excellent games! I wouldn't say that LGS stole anything.
But let's play with the thought. So let's assume that LGS has stolen ideas from other games. Puff! In that case, don't you think, that LGS invented a lot of unique ideas anyway? And let's see the base of the plot: an AI who thinks that she/he is a goddess/god wants to destroy the Earth. How many movies, novels, other games based on that? Many. The base of the story is almost bromide. But let's see how did LGS colored it! They built a wonderful and unique plot, a unique game.
My conclusion is that LGS shouldn't be charged with stoling ideas, even if they really did, because they also invented a lot of unique stuffs. But it's almost impossible, that they have stolen anything from Half-Life.

To be honest, Xen and the final boss fight really ruined HL1..
Up thill then it had been a pretty tight, well put together game. Then you got this platform jumping (which I REALLY hate anyway) mess. Then the boss... All that teleporting power and he couldn't even throw you into a bottomless abyss...
Oh and yes the cause of the trouble in D3 was taking the sould cube into hell. However, all it did was cause the devil to follow the humans back. He was held at bay by a device the scientist you meet in the comms room at the beginning, created. This failed, allowed the devil to get free, which caused all the problems

The level design in Xen really was dreadful, but so was the BOTM. And the boss (Nihilanth) was insultingly lame, but so was the Many brain. The only thing that saved SS2 was that the game didn't end after the big boss battle.
BTW - the Nihilanth did try to teleport you in the HL1 boss battle. It threw these teleportation balls at you or something like that.

Right, because it's SO much more preferable to have Goggles defeating a godlike AI, who is currently manipulating reality at will, by shooting her in the face. :P
... Nah.

You must allow Nihilanth to teleport you 3 times, otherwise you will get out of your ammunitions before Nihilanth dies. But you should run away from the other teleport balls, because the 4th time it teleports you to the 3rd place again, but that time, a gargantua waits for you there...

That's strange, I killed the bastard without being teleported even once. :erm:
Either that or it has been way too long since I played the game. :o
