now is it me, or am i the only one that thought that the organic levels at the end of ss2 bore a striking resemblence to the Xen levels at the end of hl1? i really hate to say that LGS would copy the ideas of another gaming outfit, but they seemed too similar. even the "lights" were almost exactly the same - the little tentacle things sticking out of the ground. it would make sense too chronologically, since hl1 came out in 98 and ss2 in 99.
your thoughts people?

Here are my thoughts; Xen and BotM aren't even close to be similar.

They don't seem similar to me, either.
HL1's Xen reminded me of the Mantellan Crux, the final dungeon in Daggerfall (1996).

well its the lights that really struck me. from then on i started to draw the comparisons - alien worlds, have to kill a mastermind sort of thing at the end. i guess its me.

Why do you consider those as stealing ideas? You talk like HalfLife 1 is the first game ever to have a mastermind at the end. And for your information, I don't consider Shodan and Nihilanth to be similar in any way imaginable, except they are both end bosses.

He's talking about the brain, not SHODAN.
And, when you actually think about it carefully, the plot of HL1 is disturbingly similar to the plot of the original Doom. Only told much better.

The plot of Doom:
A gate to hell opens, demons take over the Mars bases
The plot of HL1:
A gate to another world opens after a failed experiment and aliens take over Black Mesa.
You got a point there NV.

Even more so: didn't the gate to hell open because of a failed teleportation experiment? :weird:
Also, I've noticed some strange similarities between SS1 and the classic mac game (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathon_%28computer_game%29) Marathon. Its basically System Shock in reverse:
System Shock:
Rogue AI attempts to become god, player destroys it.
Marathon:
Rogue AI attempts to become god, player aids it... In a nut shell
Even weirder, they came out within months of each-other...

It's true, HL1 has a lot more in common with Doom than SS2. HL1 has almost the exact same plot as Doom, but you tend not think about it because HL1 added so much more to the gameplay and story.
Xen and the Body of the Many are only vaguely similar. I can't see too many people easily coming to the conclusion that Xen somehow inspired the BotM in SS2.

ive actually made that doom - hl1 connection myself. hm. i feel like an idiot.
