I already tried putting this in the "How To Run System Shock 2 on Windows XP/2000" thread, but no one replied so I figured i'd put it out here where it would get more traffic. I've tried many of the different things on this forum to no avail. Can anyone give me a hand? I can't even get System Shock 2s installer to run. I've tried -lgntforce and it doesn't do anything. When I put the CD in my drive and close it the disk autoplays, but when I click install it just sits there for 30 seconds or so with an hourglass. Then the autoplay screen disappears and nothing happens. Furthermore under taskman two processes start (names indented one whitespace to the right) called setup.exe and wowexec.exe. I thought maybe the installer was just taking forever to start so I left it overnight. Came back the next day and still nothing. If I try killing the processes, they don't die immediately and I get a dialogue shortly after saying that the "Win 16-bit subsystem appears to have timed out, click ok to terminate the processes or cancel to continue". Also i've tried using the different compatibility modes, and i've tried copying the disk to my hard drive and installing from there. Come to think of it, I have the same problem with Thief II. Any ideas?

Have you tried making an image of the disc on your HD and running it from there? I wonder if your disc might be damaged or something.
wowexec = Windows-on-Windows somesuch -- part of running older 16-bit apps.
I'm sure somebody here must know how to install this without the installer, ie what files to put in a directory on the HD.

Yeah, I already tried installing from an image file, same result as is already mentioned, and the disk is pretty mint. Thanks for replying though.

Just copy all content from the "shock" folder on your cd. Then create in your new location:
- folder named "current"
- file install.cfg with content like:
cd_path d:\
install_path c:\games\shock
language english
resname_base c:\games\shock+d:\shock
load_path c:\games\shock+d:\shock
script_module_path c:\games\shock+d:\shock
movie_path c:\games\shock\cutscenes+d:\shock\cutscenes
After that add to the registry (for patch):
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\shock2.exe]
@="c:\\games\\shock"
"path"="c:\\games\\shock"
And if you aren't able to see in-game videos, run the following line:
regsvr32 c:\games\shock\lgvid.ax
If the copy-thing fails, your cd (or drive) is broken. Get a new one.

I had to set the value of path to C:\my\path\to\shock with just the singular back-slashes.
