And along came System Shock 2 and changed it ALL!
On a related note, let me dig up some ShockEd history: I just read the (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_Shock_2) SS2 wikipedia article and there it says:
Yeah. Anyway, this misleading sentence, backed up by an even more misleading source, made me look up the actual release post on Sshock2.com. (
http://www.sshock2.com/showarchive.asp?month=8&year=2000) It's here, well a bit down on that page... There Saam says:
Quote:
We have compiled a working version of ShockEd, so now you all can start creating your own levels and space stations!
So this is where the idea originated that TTLG people had made their own level editor. Surely the word "compiled" just means that they gathered the necessary files in one zip-archive. Including shocked.exe, which was incidentally
compiled in debug mode. A mistake that could happen to anyone, including Irrational employees.
It does not mean, that a group of TTLG users had the source for shocked, which is largely the same as shock2.exe, but never spoke about or released it because they were bound by an (
http://www.sshock2.com/showarchive.asp?month=5&year=2000) NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) (again, somewhere down that page).
At least that's what I assume.

I'm fairly sure they did that on purpose, so that they could debug errors as they happened, since DromEd was never supposed to be released to the public. Every single version of DromEd that has ever been released was compiled in debug mode.

There goes my conspiracy theory! :(
