O.k. Pulling my hair out. I cannot tell you how many times I reinstalled the game to get it working. Glad I found this forum!
I have the CD of System Shock 2,
The official 2.03 patch, SS2 Tools version 8, DeepFried Beer Mod, Straylight Mod, SHTUPS, and Rebirth Mod.
Machines I have tried this one are: Win XP 32 Bit, Windows 7 64 Bit.
I install the CD first, then SS2Tools (because it already has the 2.03 patch in it.. does it not or am I wrong about this? It also has the win XP fix in it)
I can stop there. No in game sound. Or I can go ahead and install the rest of the Mods.. No Joy. It makes no difference.
Under Win 7 64 bit I have to enable compatibility mode for " Windows XP with service pack 3" But other than the no sound problem the game seems to play fine, save and load seems to work.
I switch hard drives in the one computer, so system specs for both machines are:
Pentium 4 (D) (CedarMills) dual core with hyperthreading (I understand it does not really have 2 physical CPU's but it's one CPU with 2 cores) @ 3.00 ghz each, 4 gigabytes of Ram.
I do Not have a hyperthreading problem, I have checked the affinity and it runs in a single core with or without the patch fix.
ATI 2600 HD Professional video card with 512 MB Ram
IDT on board sound card - I have no trouble with this card for anything period. My drivers are up to date and i do not think I am missing any codecs.
I even tried reinstalling the Indeo codecs from the CD.. that did not work.
The really funny thing is, I had the game running a few months ago.. (On the XP machine) It ran fine with sound. I only played through the training and a little of he first mission. I uninstalled it to make room because I use a small 80 gig hard drive for XP.
Since I now have a new 500 Gig drive with windows 7 I was able to make room and decided to try SS2 on both systems.
oh.. all the cut scenes or at least the opening movie plays fine with sound in both machines, it's just the in game sound that does not work.
Please help!!!! Thank You!!!
EDIT:
Sorry to make you real all the above but i fixed it. This may help someone else.
I disabled Hardware Acceleration in the AUDIO screen and in game sound works fine now.
But.. can someone tell me what the difference is between having hardware acceleration ON or OFF, .. what am I missing Sound wise having this turned off??

Thanks.. I checked that guide.. but it doesn't really tell me how to fix the problem other than turning hardware acceleration off...
Er.. it seems I cannot turn hardware acceleration back on after turning it off??
I would like to find a way to leave Hardware Acceleration On and have my sound back.. if possible.
Edit: Also, that guide says to try to enable EAX with the EAX fix in the SS2 Tool.. I do not see any info on the SS2 Tool page about this.. but I have run the tool.. and i do not have EAX enabled..
The only way I did find to re enable the hardware acceleration, is to re run the SS2 Tool.. but of course then my sound stops working again.

Post less and read more.
Meaning exactly? Was that a crack? I know you are a popular person around here but even if you were Ken Levine or GOD himself that short ambiguous answer was not appropriate.
This site has tons of info.. not all of it easy to find.
Read more??? like I said.. I read the site you sent me to.. It mentions the EAX Fix that I cannot find on the page for the info for the SS2 Tool.. so how is reading more supposed to help me?
Sorry pal, but that comment of yours rubbed me the wrong way. I have been spending hours and hours reading and searching everything I can find to fix my problems.. who are you to suggest I am not reading enough?
Edit: Your rudeness aside.. I did go back and look again and found this:
EAX Fix (Copies two necessary DLLs to the game dir and enables EAX sound. Attention: Sound settings cannot be changed during a game.)
I must have over looked it the first time.. But.. my card is EAX capable and these two dlls do not activate EAX for this game.
Oh yeah.. And I will post however a much I damn well please thank you. If you don't like that, you do not have to read them.
You know, you could have simply pointed out that I over looked that line instead of the rude quip you made.

RAHRAHRAAAH I did go back and look again
...and found the info you had previously claimed wasn't there.
You know, it rubs me the wrong way when I know I've documented every single shit and people just fail at reading.
That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if you had the HOTU game version in which case you should read the Readme that comes with it, about running oggsetup.exe to unpack the sound files.

A little OT. I have seen tis mentioned before. What is the HOTU version?

Home Of The Underdogs, now residing at hotud.org, used to have a downloadable System Shock 2 on their site. To reduce the download size the cutscenes were re-encoded with DivX-5 (which proves to be a problem nowadays due to incompatibility with current DivX iterations) and the sounds were compressed in OGG Vorbis format and had to be uncompressed into WAV format again before playing. Lets see, first your offhandedly rude to me for no reason.. then you accuse me of having a pirated version of the game. LOL
I have a retail CD version of the game.
Buddy.. you need to get a serious life. You only "Think" you have documented everything.. what about my other post telling how I have found workarounds that were not posted by you.. It seems to me your just a little upset you didn't think of those fixes. I see you didn't bother to reply to it. LOL
In any case " Mr Know It All About System Shock 2 " None of your elite advice has helped me with my problems ! LOL
I'll make a deal with you genius, you get off your high horse and start meeting people eye to eye and I will stop ribbing on you for rude behavior.
Like I said before, You know, you could have simply pointed out that I over looked that line instead of the rude quip you made.
