I always found it odd that they'd call it an Assault Rifle when it fires pistol rounds, the very definition of 'sub-machine gun'. Additionally it uses the same grip texture as the pistol with only very slight changes as well as the addition of a very odd (and huge) forward stock.
STILL NEED TO KNOW WHAT THAT SECOND BARREL IS >:

Somewhere in the manual (end of page 32) is a mention of a fancy military video that shows the Rickenbacker disconnect from the VB and fight off a group of alien attackers while the VB peacefully goes it's way. The video is said to be a simulation of course and was spread a short time before the ships lifted off from earth as a promotional measure for the UNN.
As far fetched as such an attack may be, they obviously wanted to be prepared for any occurrences and that would explain all the guns on board.

Uh, yeah. I never thought that aspect was odd at all. Of course there are going to be weapons lying around if you have a whole load of soldiers and a military warship strapped to the Von Braun. What did you expect, that they were just going to bring a bunch of unarmed military personnel along for kicks? :erg:

Well, not the weapons themselves are surprising, but the apparent choice of weapons with highly destructive potential (grenade launcher, fusion cannon...) in a pretty fragile ship (hey, spaceships aint fortresses). Then again, maybe the VB is strong enough to survive that. Who knows?

The guns never leave so much as a mark on the ship's surfaces. It would seem the possibility to blow a hole into the ship is rather small. ;)

Remember the nuke silo in the middle of a hallway on the Rick?

Wasn't Goggles forced to fire one of those nukes?
System Shock III's plot will be based around the nuclear torpedo crash-landing on nearby solar system Proxima Centauri's fifth planet and somehow its primitive guidance systems will develop into a hyper-advanced A.I. with no moral constraints.
With its newfound intelligence and radioactive emanations, the torpedo will experiment with the local fauna and develop a race of ravenous beings...
Forty-two years later, an experimental UNN time machine picks up the IFF signal from the Proxima Centauri 5 and moves in to investigate...

They'd put the shock in System Shock 3, that's for sure.

You're a sick man Kolya.
