Hi there...
I have never played SS2... I played SS1 when it came out but SS2 was to slow on my computer at the time... I am now thinking it might be fun to go back to it.. but I have some simple questions I hope you guys can help me with.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) First Question
I was asking on a gaming site about a cool fps style game that has a cool story driven co-op mode. I was told System Shock 2 dose. So I can play it online with my mate in a full story driven campaign style just like single player, but together....
Is that true?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) 2nd Question
While I was looking about for information on SS2 I found various things talking about various projects to enhance teh gfx for modern computers... like a project to replace all the textures with higher resolution ones, and a project to replace a lot of the meshes with denser meshes, so they look better.
(
http://www.shtupmod.net/) SHTUP
(
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?topic=8.0) Rebirth
Are these the only mods I should be looking at, and are these finished and ready to install? I couldn't find much info on rebirth apart form that thread...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for you time

1. Yes, you can play through the story in multiplayer, though it is very highly recommended that you play single player first in order to get the most out of your very first game.
2. You can find mods for SS2 (
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php) here. Rebirth is about as finished as its going to get, and while SHTUP isn't finished, there's no reason not to use it.
The only mods I would recommend for a first game are (
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?topic=22.0) SHTUP, (
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?topic=657.0) SHMUP and (
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?topic=691.0) Tacticool Weapon Replacements. The reason is that these all enhance the original game (better textures, models and music) rather than change it. Rebirth changes the models and textures, sometimes pretty drastically, so I'd recommend saving it for later.
Also, after you install SS2, it's recommended that you use the (
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?topic=392.0) SS2Tool utility to take advantage of all major bug fixes and patches, and the (
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?topic=527.0) SS2 Mod Manager to more easily install and uninstall mods.
Have fun! :)

What he means is, if we find out you played SS2 for the very first time in coop mode, we will find you and beat you to death. SS2 is in large part a survival-horror game. The only reason it even has a co-op mode is because the publisher forced them to include it.

And naturally, there is only one correct way to enjoy a videogame and you are an awful person if you choose to play it with a friend.
SS2 is hardly survival horror on the same level as Resident Evil or Silent Hill. It's a scary game, but it's still primarily a shooter-RPG.
Only on TTLG will people insist that it is wrong for a person to play the game in a manner he finds more enjoyable simply because it's not the proper approach. Fuck, it's not like playing co-op is on the same level as cheating to give yourself an assault rifle and 900 rounds of Standard.

No, you're only an awful person if you waste the game by playing it multiplayer for the first time. Games with proper cooperative multiplayer are far too rare these days.

For me, a large part of the atmosphere is the isolation - feeling on your own and not part of a group of survivors. You're right - he's free to enjoy the game as he wishes, but I'd agree with Enchatermon and say that playing it single player first gets the most from the game.

Because having more fun by playing co-op is an unforgivable trespass on the holy sanctity of the SS2 Singleplayer Experience™, amirite?

I think he'd get the most out of the horror aspect of the game. Whether or not he'd get the most out of the game comes down to whether or not he'd have more fun playing with a friend.

True - but a large part of that will be down to the attitude of the friend he plays it with. Some of my best game experiences have been single player games shared between two (or more) people. Adventure, strategy and RP games have all been enhanced by someone chipping in their thoughts and taking control in turns.
However, if your friend plays SS2 as if they're playing counterstrike then that's going to have a huge effect on the atmosphere.

Wow. You
really must not get out much.

You're right, my apologies to the residents of GameFAQs and NMA.
