So, I play through this game at least twice a year because it is my favorite game ever, it never gets old. I am at the end again and this whole time it occurs to me I have no idea how hacking in the game actually works. Normally I just click and rest until it works and avoid the ICE blocks or give up after a few tries.
Is there actually a correct way to do it or is it all luck of the draw?

It's just random chance. The most you can do is attempt to lower the probability of creating dark squares.

I sometimes pick nodes totally out of the way (from the line i'm making) on purpose if they are preceeded by 1 or more bright nodes, in anticipation that I won't get a run of 3 bright nodes. If I get a dark one then I go back to my line. More often than not it pays off. The number of nodes I waste in a "discard" area usually depends on the difficulty of the hack.

Don't click on ICE nodes. That's it. Each node clicked is basically a dice roll. SS2 is an RPG, remember? It's all about the character stats.

Occasionally clicking on an ICE node can be a last resort, if your skills are high enough and you need the item to avoid death.
By the way, where do you live in VA?

Save, click on an ICE node, reload. That's how hacking works.

That is infinitely lame. If you get to a point where only ICE nodes are left, you just restart the hack. It's not like nanites are ever in short supply, unless you've been doing something silly like buying stuff from vending machines.

In before the "I never use resurrection ..." quote.

Why is that silly? I need me some anti personnel bullets for the BOTM.
