The thought of a "downgrade project" has crossed my mind. There's quite a lot of unused old textures in the CRFs, ranging from beta to pre-alpha quality. Apparently at some point they thought they'd be limited to textures no larger than 64x64.

A rebuilt alpha version? Sounds like fun. But it seems like an awful lot of work for a laugh. From what I've seen of alpha it wasn't better than the released game by any yardstick.
