The 'don't ask, don't tell' approach is more or less what is already in place here. When I openly say that if someone admits to having a downloaded copy of the game, I won't allow any support given to it, I believe that anyone with a bit of common sense will refrain from providing that information when asking for help.
I don't have the habit of prodding at people that ask for help, trying to find out what kind of copy do they have. But if someone does give out the information that he/she has an illegal copy of the game, I cannot look the other way. I'm a moderator, and therefore my 'job' is to enforce the forum's policies. So until those policies change, I won't be changing my way of acting.

Yes sorry I wasn't implying you in particular one way or the other - it's just a feeling that seems to occur in these forums in general. I guess there is a fine line to tread between it and keeping up appearances to avoid unwanted attention.
Incidentally, why do ea have the rights to ss (but not ss1) as you would have thought at least the IP would remain with that of the developer, particularly as (from what I can gather) it was a case of they made the game and afterwards looked for a publisher (so weren't funded directly by one). Or is this completely wrong?

SS1 was made by Looking Glass Studios (then Looking Glass Technologies), who no longer exist.

I thought it was made by origin? Anyway, going by logic of why it's okay (i guess still not legal but safer) to distribute ss1 around then you would assume the same about thief 1 and 2 if they were not on sale.
Ah well it's all a bit confusing anyway.

Seeing as Thief games have resurfaced for DRM-based downloads, it's not implausible that the SS games might do the same, at some point. Or better yet, on GOG, where SS2 currently tops the (
http://www.gog.com/en/wishlist/) community wishlist by a significant margin.
Wherefore the forum policies aren't likely to be changed anytime soon.

By that logic, I suppose you also think that SS2 was made by Electronic Arts.

Ho ho ho. Well I'm sorry but I did not know origin were a publisher. Charming as ever.
Yes if they get released on the good old games thing that would be good. For me the drm versions don't really count as apparently you can't really mod them or anything and so if you have technical issues you are rather screwed. But yes, gog would definitely solve a problem.

Hell yeah, bitches. I got it working! W.O.O.T. My favourite game of all time is back in business! Ah, what memories.
100000X thank you for epic guy named Wrench.

WTF? When did Dan Knott change his name to "inselaffe"?
I kinda liked "Dan Knott". It reminded me of Don Knotts... and I always pictured Barney Fife whenever he posted.

Aww, now I have new problem. After I installed SS2_Tool demo started to work. But after training, I go through port of 'Navy' and then game crashes.
So, any tips for problem: "Game crashes after first loadpoint"
