Well honestly, why did you bring that up then?

Boring circular arguments are still more interesting than a dead forum!

Objection!

Take that!

The difference is that if he comes back asking for help, and I find out he's using a downloaded copy of the game, I'll lock the thread.

Aww D'Arcy, that was the perfect setup for you to post an Edgeworth comeback, but you let us down, man. :(

In my opinion downloading very old games like SS2 isn't really big crime.

The thing is it's rather harsh to be all uppity about such things when they game is quite clearly unavailable to the vast majority of people who wish to play it by legal means.
Particularly when many such uppities hoard multiple copies of said games (be it thief gold, ss2 or otherwise - it seems even thief 1 and 2 are getting impossible to find in the uk now too and they were always readily available).
I find it perfectly understandable that if people cannot buy the game then to be honest what else is there they can do? Ebay certainly doesn't count either - the money goes to no developer (or even anyone with the rights to sell a budget copy). That's not even going into the dodgy practises of a lot of ebay sellers. My thief gold was scratched that I got off ebay and I was thankful enough that it still just about works (at least the cd backs up easy enough).
I suppose it would instead be better to let such games die, only to be enjoyed by the chosen few.
On the other hand i can fully understand a "don't ask, don't tell" approach but some on here have been rather proactive and hostile to anyone coming on here asking for help in the past, almost like a witchhunt for dodgy copies.

The problem is that such an approach creates a lot of misunderstandings and uncertainty. On one side you have the forum policy which many newbies are not aware of. On the other there's the very real paucity of legal means to acquire the game, and hence a practice that differs from the official policy and is held against it in a continous debate. This difference between policy and practice is not for hypocrisy but for legal reasons of course. But the problem is very much the same.
So the debate won't stop because it's inherent to the situation of this forum. The only way out would be to change this situation, but no one knows how. It doesn't seem to be in our hands.
In the end it's just wearing everyone out. Everyone does as he deems right and gets annoyed when the debate is rekindled.
