yeah, well, it's kind of a general question and since this board averages about a post a day I didn't think it'd be any kind of troublesome clutter.

Well, what I would suggest is keeping Strength as a top priority to upgrade, and don't go past Research 1 until later in the game. (you'll see why)
The rest is up to your playstyle. If you go Navy or Marine I suggest you invest in Standard weapons mainly, energy can be useful too, heavy is enough at skill 1.

I googled up a couple.
do you basically start w/1 in all stats and 0 in skills, so a +1 research bonus while training would give you research = 1?

Well, when you are training, pick the option that will be most useful for you. I'd not pick research, rather update it with cyber modules after you begin.
