Have you applied the hyper-threading fix?

No. But I don't think I need to. According to the process affinity settings in the task manager, the process already runs on just one core. Seems like vista detects that this is a single threaded application.
And, as I already added to my original post, I have the same problem on my old laptop which has a P3 processor. So no smp-problems there.
Edit:
You gave me an idea there. I thought that maybe that multiprocessor problem might be the source for the crashes i have when running the game in wine. I used the linux scheduling tools to set the processor affinity of the emulated process. It seems to have worked so far. I could finish the whole training part and enter the main game without any crashes. Before, I could not even finish a single training exercise without the game crashing. If this game runs in wine, it's great news. It means you can run it on almost any modern pc (assuming you have some linux installed).

Good thing your problem is gone. :)
But I do have one thing to say; don't worry about driver versions. Just try to fix your problem according to the symptoms.
Black screen when trying to start a new game?
1) Try add safe_texture_manager at the bottom of cam.cfg
2) Try all the compatibility modes (if Vista has those)
Drivers is something you should worry about when no fixes from the FAQs work.

SS2 can be picky for some people. I was very lucky to only have to apply the dualcore fix to make mine work flawlessly on my WinXP Pro installation.
