I tried to do a straight reinstall from the original CD and got the DX6.1 Limitation error. Trying to be clever, I then just copied over my old version from my XP Pro installation to my Win 7 drive. Figured I'd give it a shot since I have so many mods and fixes installed that I wasn't looking forward to doing it all again. I was surprised to see that it ran (!) but with no sounds or cut scenes, and the "no CD" patch seemed to have broken. So some questions:
* I read this thread (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128197) but there was no mention of the DX6.1 error, so I was wondering if this maybe was with respect only to the 32 bit version of Win 7?
* I haven't read about anyone actually doing an install of an older version of DirectX, so is that not needed?
* If I use the command line
K:\Setup.exe -lgntforce method do I have to run that as Administrator?
* Is there a way to "fix" my copied over directory method to get everything to work again? I'm thinking that maybe I'd try to re-run SSTool to reapply the patches that seem to have broken. I guess I also have to reinstall the Indeo codec and re-register it and LGVID.AX. I might give that a try.
* Would it be better, if I have to reinstall, to just do the SHOCK folder copy method and run SSTool? Has anyone gotten SS2 to work on Win 7/64 that way?

I'm very hesitant about installing new codec packs on a clean install of Win 7. I know I need Indeo for the cut scenes, but would it be cleaner if I use the IV5PLAY install file that is on the CD? Does that "just" install what is needed to run the game, or does it do a lot of replacing of OS stuff and redirection?

All that does is reinstall the codecs needed for the videos. You shouldn't need to install a codec pack; in fact, sometimes they actually break the SS2 videos (personal experience talking).

Thanks E. I'll give it a try.
...
Didn't work. It popped up a panel saying it wouldn't install Indeo 5 Video or the Audio codecs because newer versions had been found.

Hoo-rah! I got the cut scenes to work (at least the Intro video that I used as the test). And I got the game sounds to work. Just needed to follow the instructions.
The Indeo codec on the SS2 disk would not install ("newer version found") so I used the one on the Strangebedfellows Video/Cutscenes Guide and did what was written. Seems to work. For the game sounds I had to turn Hardware Acceleration off. That one has me scratching my head because I am using the same physical system (MB, sound device) with the Win 7 install that I was using in XP Pro.

Yes, following instructions helps. ;)
Glad to hear it's working. :thumb:

CR@@@P! Now it's not. I ran DDFix and set 1600x1200 with the Video Fix checked off, and now the cutscenes stopped working.

For me, to get the cutscenes working it's necessary to enable the video fix in DDFix and run SHOCK2.exe in administrator mode. Presumably the fix tries to re-register the codec every time you start the game, and you need administrator rights to do that.

This is because Vista and Windows 7 have a new software audio stack. DirectSound can't be hardware-accelerated anymore.

Thanks ML. I did figure out the Administrator issue for running SS2, so I did get my sound back. But before that I decided to undo DDFix and delete the files. Once I did figure out the Admin stuff I re-extracted the DDFix files and tried to run the GUI to re-do that fix. Now the GUI file will not run. I get that new popup box that tells me the program has terminated. I tried running as Admin etc, no luck.
