Man, i think you look at portal from a totally wrong angle. Think of it more like the "cube" movies. You don't really know what's going on AND you don't know that the graphities you find on walls are from other test subjects. They could also be from scientists for example (since you don't know where everyone is and what exactly has happened). I never even expected portal to have a great story, when i saw the first trailers. It always appealed to me as sort of a puzzle game. When i realized it HAD a story - even if not as big and immersive as you'd like it to be - i was excited. I like the humor, i like the ending, and i kinda like the gameplay. Yes, it is short, yes it could be far more immersive, but then again, i look at it more like an arcade game.
Like, you know, when you play super street fighter 2 turbo edition or something, you don't expect a big story, you just play it for the fun. Not every game is made to pull you completly inside, like system shock and a lot of rpg games do. Like ZylonBane or someone mentioned before. You really have to see it more like a puzzle game. I mean, tetris doesn't give you an illusion of anything. It has no story, it's just simple gameplay. Still, it's very entertaining and fun.
Portal offers challenge modes and advanced chambers, which clearly point in the direction the dev's wanted it to go -> arcade -> highscores -> fun.

Yeah on that level it's fun. But actually it were the comments here that made me assume there was more to it. Best game since thief, GLaDOS better than SHODAN, blah. I don't subscribe to that view.

Yeah well, it's totally about expectations. If you don't expect it to be something and it turns out to have a little bit more then you thought, you're probably surprised, excited, whatever. But if you expect it to be something PERFECT and you realize later on, that it isn't, you'll probably be disappointed.

You think I can sue the people who debauched my expectations?

And who happens to crack jokes all along. Okay.
Please explain how you convinced yourself that an insane AI isn't allowed to have a sense of humor. GLaDOS has obviously been murdering test subjects for a very long time-- their deaths are no big deal to her. That just makes the situation all the more bleak and horrible for YOU.
And I maintain that there are no SS2 references or homages or whatever in Portal.

You see, I tried to explain why the game lacks immersive power for me. I wrote quite a lot about what is known as "breaking the 4th wall". I respect you for being a smart guy, so I'm sure you have understood my gripes, if not accepting them. Anyway, we don't have to get into petty fights about fictitious AI behaviour now.
Plus, I don't want to criticize Portal all the time. I don't want to be pushed in that corner. It's a cool game, I like it. Only for me, it's not what you and Digi said it was.
That and SHODAN would outsmart GLaDOS on an abacus. :p

GLaDOS isn't too bright. She has that kind of fractured intelligence many AI exhibit- like a six-year-old with an encyclopedia.

And what would you do outside? Shoot portals in the sides of buildings and fall to your death? Please.
Whoa... I never realized the "mighty" ZylonBane actually lacks any sort of creativity.

You'll get out of the test chambers soon enough Kolya. Then the computer gets really funny, Mind you I thought you were pretty much just swapping one bland environment for another.
But it looks like they fully intend on expanding this game in its own world. Reading an interview with some Valve devs, they must've made a little freudian slip when they said "for this first portal game" or something like that.
And if you're ambitious enough. check this out:
