Yes, get Bloodlines, ... I'm playing with the official and fan patches, and the latter at least does do some game balancing.
I looked for patches a while ago, but missed any fan ones (just got the official patch 1_2) - any recommendations? Ta!

Check Planet Vampire or something. The newest version of unofficial fan thepatch is 2.6. Besdies fixing bugs it also changes the balance a bit by switching XP, conversation requirements, places weapons can be found in, places where special items can be found at etc.
I recommend official patch 1.2 only for first playthrough (to play the game the way the creators intended) and then the unofficials for subsequent plays.

I loved bloodlines, being a bit of a vampire myslef :joke: Completed it many time, seen all the endings, even tried working on a fan mission.
The problem was that the game was rushed (sound familiar).
Combat has it's problems but when you get used to its little kinks it's not too bad.
The worlds very small with quite a bit of back tracking which gets annoying.
The main problems boil down to these:
The multiplayer mode was cut from the game. It was supposed to be a mini mmorpg. Very cool from the sound of the previews but this wa axed to get the game out quicker.
It uses an early version of the HL2 engine. Looks like a lot of bugs were fixed before HL2 was released (this was almost released before HL2). There was a major problem with physics, where your hugly powerfull vampire can get stuck on a tin can and can't move!
Again the rushed shedual ment that the AI scripts were buggy. conversations going in the opposite direction of the way you had chosen, important items dissapearing meaning re-starts. One even caused a game crash! Before a quick patch fixed it, the only way to get past it was to use a console cheat.
There was also a complete lack of dev tools for it. This is really what is killing the game these day. There are a few fan created tools but they are limited due to the fractured nature of the game code.
Don't get me wrong, I love the game and recommend it. I just whish they had released some proper tools to get a mod community going. It may have sold better and saved Troika. I would would like to have seen someone like christine and the makers of RTUNN get hold of it! We could have been looking at the perfect engine for an SS2 remake (due to the RPG nature of the game).
on topic
DX - good
SS2 - better
I hated the brothers "Don't hurt anyone, even if they're shooting you in the face!" attitude. On the first mission I always went around with the crossbow and tranq darts but it always reacted like I went around mowing people down with a machine gun!! Plus I hated all the ending.... gameplay wasn't too bad though

I think the game may have been rushed a bit, but the 1.2 patch takes care of any bugs found in the first version that was released including the dialog trees.
And no, I don't believe that ranged weapons are weak at all. My first time playing was as a Nosterfeau, (ugly and you have to sneak everywhere) and I didn't touch ranged weapons because I had heard the same thing.
However on my second play though, I went with a Toreador which is more suited to ranged weapons IMO, and was pleasantly surprised how well they worked.
If you liked Deus Ex and SS2 you owe it to yourself to try this.
Back to the subject though.
SS2 in unbelievable! I'm on the Rickenbacker now so I MUST be almost done. I did have to use a walkthrough once with the code that you need from the artwork. I must have tried for over 2 hrs trying to figure that out, but got so frustrated I finally gave in. Tough game, very tough even on default IMO. But so freakin good, it's scary! (pun intended).
Now of course I'll have to play DE again. I've completed that 3 times now and even after the third time was STILL finding stuff I hadn't the first couple of times. I think this time I'll play as a total prick, and make fun of Gunther and Anna and go as a total killing machine. I've always gone the stealth root in the past.

These are pretty much my two all time favorite games, but I've got to throw my vote behind DX. SS2 has atmosphere and better gameplay, but DX has a much broader, deeper plot, like an interactive novel. That makes DX more immersive for me. SS2 also suffers from having its climax occur on a particularly bad level (though it's not quite as bad as the final boss battle in HL1).

I like SS2 more, but that is because I haven't played Deus Ex. :p

If you tell me where I can buy it without using the internet, then I'd love to buy & play it. :erm:
Well, online buying will hopefully soon be an option for me. :)
