Personally I found DX to be a better RPG and SS2 to be a better shooter ;)
Funny that, I found just the opposite :D In SS2 it was wrench all the time in DX it was gunz gunz gunz :p

I find that odd as well.
I think of SS2 as more of an RPG and Deus Ex as more of a shooter.
Either way, both great games. I just wish we had more in this genre.
The only other good FPS/RPG I can think of in the last few years was VTM Bloodlines. Great game even with the bugs.
Arx was a good game as well, but I could never get through it because of bugs or the gameplay mechanics.

I love Arx Fatalis, It's a fantastic game. You really should give it another try. It doesn't actually have many bugs in a technical sense, just some unfinished quest. It has some of the best atmosphere you'll ever feel in a game. It's just a shame it wasn't longer.
I've been thinking about picking up a copy of Bloodlines but most of the reviews I've read on it were negative. Is there a demo for it?

I don't believe there is a demo for it, but if you like FPS/RPG hybrids, I can't imagine how you couldn't like it.
The gameworld is filled with very colorful characters that you can't help but like even though most of them are blood sucking vampires. (as you are yourself). There's also many very cool vampiric powers availible to you, but at a cost, something like Deus Ex or SS2. Deciding what powers or what clan to join are tough but fun.
Just make sure you patch if before playing and it should run bug free.

Anyway, my generalization on putting Doom 3, Halo, and DXIW is the same thing ZB replied with. They all have very simplified gameplay and crappy design. Most people who like those games aren't the same people who like games like the original Deus Ex or the System Shock series.
Just because DXIW is inferior to the greatest game ever doesn't mean that it is bad. Also, I don't really understand what you're getting at because most people don't like DXIW period, unlike the millions of raging Halo and Doom fanboys.

Another good word for Bloodlines here. I completed the game 5 times now - there is so much depth to it. There are so many little bits that add to the atmosphere and immerse you in the world. The great thing is that, despite you are a supernatural vampire, everything is portrayed so realisticly, you can almost believe the world to be real. And there's plenty of very interesting characters, with varied dialogue complete with audio and facial animations :D
The gameplay is very interesting too, allowing for many various techniques, though, at later stages it focuses more on combat (but by that time you should hopefully be quite skilled in that).

Does the patch also balance the game better? I keep hearing about the disparity between melee and ranged combat with the general opinion that ranged combat was very weak compared to melee. I also heard complaints that the game world was somewhat small for an RPG, especially the outdoor levels.
I think I'll probably grab a copy next time I see it. It's only $19.99 now so I don't have much to lose.

Yes, get Bloodlines, especially as it ought to be real cheap now. Almost all the bug issues have been fixed either by official or unofficial patches, and it has a huge amount of character, even with me taking the best part of a year to (not yet even) finish it. Horrendous resource hog though, you pretty much need a gig of ram. I don't have too many issues with balance, though I'm playing with the official and fan patches, and the latter at least does do some game balancing. Ranged is generally less effective against the more supernatural enemies, but it does say that in the description for it.
I still prefer SS2 to DX, though DX improves every time I replay it. The main problem I have always had with DX is that it has too many 'WTF???' moments where the dialogue or voice acting is just so ludicrously bad that it is impossible to take seriously, destroying immersion. Overall it's still one of my favourites though.

Melee is better in the beggining, ranged is bater at later stages.
Once you get your hands one some of the better guns and keep your distance, ranged can be quite devastating.
The world isn't too open ended, like morrowing; seems more linear. However, there are a few locations to visit in each section of the town and plenty of varied sidequests to keep you occupied. Even though the main plotline is pretty linear, it's pulled off well and allows you to choose which side you wish to ally yourself with at the end (there are multiple endings).

I have only completed the game once so far (loved it), and just used a gun wherever possible (my vampire didn't want to get blood on his shirt). I still completed the game and it didn't harm my enjoyment - maybe it is easier with melee skills, but the difference doesn't seem to affect enjoyment.

Yes, get it! I bought it for £9.99 not long after it came out, brand new in Game - it seemed a shame that it hit budget that quick when it was so good. I'm not normally into vampires (I'm a zombie man) but still loved it.
