SS2 and Deus Ex.. Which is better? - by michaelg

Well I went a long, long time without playing past the first or second Deus Ex mission. It was when I forced myself into it that I got completely taken over by it.
For the sake of the thread, I'd say I like Deus Ex better at the moment, but that means nothing really because it's about what game features I'm most fond of at any particular time. Like most other people here, I look to the games for different things. Gone are the days when I could just say "Ok, this is a better game than this"
But yeah, for now Deus Ex :p

personally? i lump all the games into one superseries. they flow together well enough, with DX being the prequel, and SS being the unfortunate end result of what AI we see in DX.

And Invisible War being a horrible nightmare that never happened...

What JK said. You shouldn't really compare them, since they were meant to be played (and enjoyed) differently.
Oh for the love of god, CAN WE STOP WITH THE "these games are too different too compare" argument? Whenever ANY two games are compared, someone ALWAYS yells that! "Oh no, the hand models are different, you can't compare the two games."
Both games are an FPS with a good bit of RPG throw in. Both feature a storyline, both feature an inventory with plenty of pickupable items, both allow for ranged and melee, both introduce the element of computers or hacking, both have biological and mechanical enemies.
If anything, these two games SHOULD be compared.

In any case, I found SS2 to be "better." The atmosphere caught me much more than in Deus EX. Gameplay wise, I think both games are on similar level, just going in slightly different directions.
Not saying Deus EX is bad or anything but... it's one of those games I played thoroughly paying attention to the story and two months later I forgot what has happened in it :erg:

I understand that it's hard to compare the two games as they are a bit different as far as the storylines go, was just intersted in what you guys thought.
But as far as saying "this game is better than this game", I can still make those observations myself.
I recently played Fear and was pretty dissapointed. While I found the AI the best I've seen in a game, I found the game itself got very repetitive after a while and never got more than half way through.
I was also a sucker and purchased Prey and although some interesting gameplay ideas in it, just like Fear, basically just another run of the mill shooter. It was was Prey that got me thinking about SS2 again as I got bored about half way through that as well. I haven't gone back to it yet and doubt I will.
And although I know Mr. Bane thought DE IW a piece of crap, I think the game was much better than most give it credit for. I've played it 3 times now and enjoyed it the last time more than the first. Of course nothing could compare to the original, but still a fun little game.

You misunderstood my point, dear sir. Of course you can compare any two videogame, what I was trying to say is that you gain nothing by comparing these two. They're both must-play games in my opinion, and any sort of order will just make new people try the first instead of the second.
But anyway, since michaelg explained that he chose an inappropriate title for the topic, and that was the cause of confusion, it's useless to discuss this anymore. :)

It's not
just the storyline that's different.

90% of the people who play IW think it's a piece of crap. The ones who don't are the same group of people who enjoy Halo, Doom 3, etc.

I enjoyed SS2 a bit more than DX, but they are both exceptional games. I couldn't recommend one over the other, or say one is "better".
DX:IW did not deserve the Deus Ex name. Without it, I might have concluded that it was a half-decent game.
I agree about F.E.A.R. I feel it's been highly overrated by the press and most gamers. The AI is very good indeed, and the atmosphere of the game is nicely done. Also, no one can dispute that the slow-mo action is fun to mess around with. But other than the eye candy, the AI, and a few other novel little additions: it's a very repetitive and generic shooter.

That's an interesting statement. I think as Yakoob stated both games do have a lot in common and that's why I thought this might be an interesting post. Yes the storylines are different but both games very similar in many ways.
As far as 90% of people hating IW, I'm not sure where you got your figures from for that. I DO know that professional critics liked the game when if first came out for the most part. A quick Google search just showed me that Gamerankings has an average score of 83% for the game with the user reviews being 75%.
So... I hope you won't be offended if I don't take your statement as gospel.
And no, I hated D3 and have never played Halo so another broad generalization that I don't believe to be accurate.

Deus Ex is #1 and System Shock 2 varies from #4 all the way down to #8 or so. Not a tough decision for me.
