How does on activate these? I'm on the ifrst level and have found a repulsor lift I need to use to get up to a button, but it doesn't seem to increase my jump height - I just fall a bit slower, and still can't reach the button. I figure I must be doing something wrong, but what?

You don't need to jump when you're on the lift. If it's green you'll float upwards, and if it's red you'll fall slowly. There is not always a button to reverse the lift, but if there is often the button is hidden or inaccessable until later.

Ahh, I was stepping on a slowfall one and not a lift, apparently. That explains it. Thanks!
p.s. And here I was thinking you weren't around much these days, but apparently it's just that you largely stay out of CommChat. Hello!

Nope, I'm a pretty frequent poster, actually, and tend to keep a window open to TTLG all day long. :)

Enjoy the game, Aerothorn! Are you playing with the new mouselook mod?
I wish I could play the game for the first time again, to recapture that sense of awe and wonder.

Yep, mouselook mod - makes things much friendlier to my modern sensibilities.
Alas, I too will probably never be able to capture that 1994 spirit of wonder and awe, having played System Shock 2, Deus Ex, and numerous other games inspired by System Shock. That said, it's still pretty rad.
I'm actually playing it to right a chapter on it for my "history of narrative in video games" book. Not sure entirely what form that will take, but I got some healthy notes. Though some of them sound pretty strange out of context: "Logs are frequently attached to corpses."
