I just activate the reactor destruct and have fled to level 5. Do I have time to screw around or what? The station shakes periodically. I know I have to get through all of Level 8 still. Should I be in a rush or can I take my time?

I went through that part recently for the first time, I was already done with deck 5 so it gave me some extra time, but I went through deck 8 pretty slowly and I never saw anything more than shaking once in a while.
So I think you can just take your time, the shaking gets a little annoying after a while though. ;)

Just get to the escape pods on level 5 already (I'm assuming you haven't yet). The game doesn't end at that point, which is an unfortunate spoiler but an unavoidable one given the question you're asking.
