Hi !
First, congratulations to the makers/developers of SS1 Portable. I downladed it recently from StrangeBedFellows and the good game it was only got better with SS1 Portable. I also DL'ed the SSP Win9x package which was on the same site.
Second, I installed it on my PC and the SS1 Portalbe is running very slow.
My PC specs are (please, don't laugh, surely it will be upgraded very soon):
- Windows 98 SE
- 768 MB RAM
- nVidia Geforce MX440SE
- CPU Athlon XP 1800+
I was playing at resolution 1024x768 and the game was below 30 frames per second. Surely it was below 20 fps... it was running really too much slow on my PC. Then I changed to 800x600 and the game, while running a bit faster than it was, still runs below acceptable speed.
What can I do? In order to get better speed, will I have to use resolution 640x480?
PS: I am using the DosBox that came with the SS1 portable to run it. I didn't even know DosBox could run under Win98, but it's the only way the game worked here. I tried every .exe/.bat that came with the SSP and all of them (EXCEPT DOSBOX) gave me black screen, freezing my PC (in these cases, not even the Origins logo appeared).
Thank you!

Well, with Windows 98 you always have the option to start in pure dos mode which would probably be a better bet with your processor spec than running the game via dosbox.

dosbox=bad choice for you.try the (
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,211.0.html#win9x) win9x fix on a clean istall of ssp, make sure to use the 800*600 resolution and you should be fine.I have played it on something as low as p3 500/voodoo3 8mb/128mb ram and 800*600 was smooth as butter..

I did a clean install of SSP, but the only way (again) I could get it to work was using the Dosbox included in the package.
And about the Win9x Fix... it comes with high res mods, a dgvesa.bat, mouse.bat, but doesn't comes with a Windows 98 Fix per se (at least the files names doesn't show this :)))
When I click the mouse2kv.bat, my PC goes black screen and freezes (I have to reboot it). It appears DGvesa doesn't works too, maybe because my videocard is nVidia Geforce instead of Voodoo, so the only other option I have is using Dosbox.
And even so, the game runs when *it wants to*... sometimes the game runs and a little after, it backs to Windows 98, closing the game; sometimes it even doesn't run... but the Dosbox is the only option that doesn't show me any freezing black screens :))
I will uninstall the game for now... When I upgrade and install Windows XP on my PC, maybe the game runs smoothly... but for now *tears*
Thank you for helping me!

Weird. I never have had any problem running SS1 directly under Win98.
On the other hand, I have a CPU that's barely faster than yours, and it runs SS1 under DOSBox at a perfectly playable speed.
