I'm playing System Shock for the first time; just gone through the Research level, and about to head up the elevator to--I think the reactor?
It's a weird experience. The game is so unapproachable. The levels are mazelike, doorways hard to see. Not much sense of getting shot, and using the lead pipe it's hard to know the range of it. But I'm liking it so far--except the cyberspace bits.
It's also been quite interesting as I played through Bioshock 2 just recently, and the design legacy is still visible, most notably in the way the narrative is fleshed out through audio logs and people talking directly to your radio.

Congrats on finding a great game!
I'm sure you'll love it. Just remember that it came from an era before game designers had to spoon feed you. It's hard, just like life :)
