Cyberspace in System Shock is hacking in 3D. We get data bits, security authorisations, we unlock doors, etc.

I vaguely recall Irrational answering to why they didn't put more CS in ss2 and they said that not enough ppl embraced it in the first ss (which is total bullshit IMO) and so they only implemented it in a limited way in ss2 (also bullshit if you can even call those striped rooms CS).
As much as I love ss2, I missed the cyberspace feature a lot. In ss1, the game was already immersive and liberating. Just walking around and looking at stuff was satisfying in itself and then they added another layer of liberation to an already, seemingly limitless game and let you fly around freely in 3-space in a retro looking world and take your hacker role in a whole new direction.
.....shit, I wish we could go back to the good old days of the early 90s.

No, it's Descent with worse graphics.
It is hacking in regards to your character though. You are known as the 'hacker' and its not because of your ability to fiddle with wires to open doors. The reason you took the job on Citadel was to get that new interface so you could take your hacking to the next level. Its not like real world hacking of course but in the universe of SS(and alot of sci-fi, you know that whole cyberpunk thing) it is hacking.
