A recent discussion in the forums reminded me of how much I loved ss1 (moreso than even it's sequel) and I realized, as I have many times before, that we just won't be able to reproduce ss1 in higher quality without losing some of the game. CCP, if and when complete, will be a commendable remake but it will still stand out as a remake since it can't replicate the finest details that gave ss1 it's own identity.
I think ToxicFrog was working on an ss1 editor though I have no idea what the status on that is. If it's possible to dig that deep into the game then perhaps it's worth considering the possibility of remaking ss1 assets and repackaging them so that ss1 stays ss1. Of course if you change too much of anything then it will clearly look like a whole new game but what if it was something as simple as making a few textures cleaner, richer and adding depth through some clever shading techniques (I just mean in terms of the art, not texture maps).
I'm not bringing this up with any particular angle in mind. If I were to do anything it might be months from now and it might be just a weapon or 2 when I'm bored. I just thought I'd throw the notion out there to see what ppl think and to have a better understanding of what's possible.
At the same time I'm also thinking that it might be best to leave the game alone. We've already done so much to ss2 that, fully modded it feels noticeably different. There might be something to be said for prserving a piece of the ss history, so that every time we replay it, it brings us back to the first time we played it so that we can enjoy it in the same way. Otherwise it may lose that nostalgic element.
I can't decide which is more "right". Thoughts?

Define "fully modded". It's really just the AI mods that change SS2's feel. The other popular mods, like SHTUP and ADaob, are fairly transparent to the user experience.

You're right. I suppose I was referring to all the balance mods, the weapon mods, the couple of different styles of AI mods. Not all of these can be appllied together obviously but it sort of gives ss2 a "build your own pizza" element so it doesn't feel so vintage anymore.

Nice Idea!
I don't see how it couldn't be done. I've looked at the SS hack project source(and even made a cheesy mac port) and the SS1 engine looks like it could suport a lot more mod wise then people generaly say.
If you are interested, I could spend a few hours making a BMP injector(Replaces the images) for you, infact I may just do it anyway ;). Interested?

The TSSHP source is not the official SS1 engine. It's an own fan-made engine build from scratch. So actually, you can implement every feature you desire

If you mean a bmp injector for the original game yeah I'd be interested (and probably others too) but if its for the hack project, that project will never be finished so it would be kinda wasteful.

My main problem was that I never played SS1 when it first came out, and now I don't have a computer old enough to play it normally or new enough to emulate it through DOSBox etc.
Er, System Shock Portable?

My computer is almost six years old and it runs SS1 through DOSBox at 640x480 just fine. You must have one seriously ancient rig there.

Yep, its for the original game. But technicly tsshp uses the data for the original game, so there isn't much of a diffenece.
I've started work on the extractor(Almost got it exporting images!), it should be finished in a few days. I'll upload it to my site when I'm done. Watch this space! (

Sure. What I meant to say that alot of the actual game logic was stored in the SS1 data files, as apposed to hard coded into the exe. For example, what happens when you walk into Shodan's death machine is actuly stored in the level data, not built into the exe(I gather).

Plus theres nothing stopping anyone from picking up where the TSSHP team left off. Even if they went in and implemented gravity rather than always running around in no clip mode, that`d be something.
There must be a heap of little odds and ends with the code waiting to be finished off.
