Oh my god, this is the most random, ridiculous battle ever. I'd even prefer it if Shodan was one of the floating face things, because then you could at least use some strategy, like the turbo, decoy, or recall power-ups. I've searched through the archives, and it seems that the battle should take something like 10 seconds before Shodan blacks out your screen? Mine takes about two and a half. I can get the Pulser off maybe 5-7 times in that time. Honestly, this is one of the poorest designed challenges I've played, and the only reason I'm still trying is how much I loved the rest of the game. It's like playing the lottery and never, ever winning... so basically, just like playing the lottery.
My question is: Is there anything wrong with my game/computer? Should it take Shodan longer to pixel-out the screen? Or, is there any other advice?

It's a sad side-effect of having more powerful computers than Shock 1 was originally designed for, IIRC; if you were playing it on a 486DX2 SHODAN would take a lot longer to assimilate the screen.
D'Arcy's advice from a previous thread may help:

Remember to keep firing even when her full face is already formed. I've ended a few games like that.
In fact, there are two or three hints in that one.

Yeah, still not even close. Is there any way to give myself more time, or hell, just to cheat past this? I honestly don't care about "beating" this battle, since it has 0 skill involved. I'd just like to have the satisfaction of seeing the ending or whatnot.

When you win, you go straight to the ending video, which is all over Youtube.

You could try to slow down your computer a bit while playing. Either by running some calculation expensive application (eg converting a video) or by (

K, I thought your SSP fixed this? I had the problem and it went away when i switched to SSP.

That's been reported by some people, yeah. I haven't confirmed it myself yet, but it might be a side effect of dgvesa.
Also you should have no such problems in DOSbox emulation, which is also part of SSP now.

How strange--I just finished the game yesterday (I'm using DOSBox and all normal difficulty settings), and on my PC, it takes quite a while for her face to be fully formed. I loaded up a savegame just now, and it takes around 66 seconds from the time I enter that room. I was actually slightly disappointed (but also a little relieved) by how easy SHODAN was to defeat.

That's not strange, it makes perfect sense.

By strange, I was referring to Roder's experience with the quick fade-in.
