Have a strange problem. Whenever I run CDSHOCK.BAT, I get the problem the system cannot open COM1 port requested by the application in which I go around it by clicking ignore and opening the dos window. The game seems to run fine, the intro runs and I get to go to the main menu. I put it my name and the stats I want the game to be at and then it crashes. Have you guys run into this problem before?

are you actually clicking START when it crashes, or does it crash before then?

It crashes when I click start.

okay, this is just a theory, but it may have something to do with the mouse. for a while i couldn't figure out why whenever i reloaded the game from the main menu the game would crash, but as near as i can figure it has to do with the cursor being outside the range of resolution or something like that when the game engine loads. i always used the keyboard because the mouse moved way too fast and it was really awkward to use, and my mouse was always at the bottom of the screen. once i started moving the mouse upwards then reloading, the crashes stopped.
so instead of clicking start, why not use the arrow keys to select it, then hit enter?

Nope, still crashes. The thing is I've never even been able to play the game to even reload it, Ive never got past the play new game screen. Once I click start, poof its gone...

Isn't this that problem where it says "Not enough memory to create EMail icon"? Maybe that message is obscured for some reason, but it sounds like the same one. It's a known problem. To get around it and launch the renderer you used to have to do all sorts of crap.
Have you tried System Shock Portable or the various fixes to get it running (of which there are a lot)?

Well I didn't know there was an XP patch out there, so I downloaded it, and guess what, no crashing. I don't even need DosBox. The game runs just fine in the command prompt. Thanks for the help though.

heh, i keep forgetting about the XP patch because my installation of SS1 has moved from 3 different computers.

Did you try moving your mouse pointer all the way into the upper left hand corner of the menu screen then using the keyboard to start the game?

you're a little late on that one, NV :p
