Hello,
I'm very happy with SS-portable. However, I'm experiencing speed problem.
Sometimes the game suddenly speeds up or slows down, affecting
the sound and the gameplay. Any idea where it comes from ?
I'm using Windows XP SP2 on a Dell Inspiron 9300 notebook (Nvidia Graphics card, sigmatek sound).
Also, is it possible to change the default sound card ? I'd prefer playing the
a SB16 (FM) emulation, using VDMSound, instead of the default MIDI sound.
Thanks a lot !

For your second question, it is possible, but I think SS-P may be missing some of the required files, since it's a little... too streamlined.
You need EngInst.res and Install.exe, both of which are on the CD.
If you have both, run the latter and you should be able to configure the audio.
You also need a full Sound folder with SBlaster subfolder.
The general midi versions do sound much better, though. In basically all games that support it.

Yes, that can seem strange, but I prefer the old FM sound ;-)

I also prefer the old SB16 music in the case of System Shock. Too many playthorughs with that music.

I was just playing around with running System Shock in a Virtual PC yesterday, and I had it mostly working but, because VirtualPC doesn't support MPU-401 audio, I gave it up as a failure.
Still, I suppose it might be useful for anyone who can't get any of the other methods of running the game to work.

Is it in particular areas of the game or at random? My first thought is to check the power settings of your notebook as it may be adjusting the CPU setting to improve battery life (even if you're connected to the mains).
