Squares appearing around some lights; snow flakes appearing as squares (Thief II) - by twhalen2600

I've been spoiled by not experiencing many problems with Thief and Thief 2 under the NewDark patch. However, in the past week I've started noticing "squares" around some light sources. I first noticed it in "Breathing Corpses" and last night saw it in "Gathering at the Inn". In the latter mission, I also noticed the snowflakes appearing as squares without any detail. I have included a screenshot and a video (both from "Gathering") below and also pasted my display specs.
I don't know why this started happening - it's on a PC that has played the Dark Engine games near flawlessly for over four years now. The only recent change is that I installed the Xsplit Gamecaster program, which I had running while playing Thief 2. Thinking this was the problem, I closed Xsplit and ran Thief 2 again, but the light problem remained. Again, this isn't happening with all light sources, only some.
I had NewDark v.1.24 at the time I first noticed it. This morning I ran the latest Tafferpatcher (v. 2.0.18) without installing any extra enhancements, but the issue has remained.
I appreciate any time and help offered and will be happy to provide further information. If this issue was resolved elsewhere please let me know (I did a quick search and found nothing, though I swear I've read about something the same as this or similar to this in these forums before...)

It looks like there's a problem with 'bitmap.crf'. It's strange that a problem would only occur now, but it could be that the problem started a while ago but only showed up when you played an FM with snow/light coronas.
In my installation, made with Tafferpatcher, Thief2\RES\bitmap.crf is 124kb. If your copy isn't that size, or doesn't exist, you can get it from your T2 CD (#1). It's one of the few files that wasn't changed by the 1.18 patch so you won't be installing an outdated file.

Thank you! That was the problem. I didn't have "bitmap.crf" in my RES folder. I copied it from my CD and it works now.
And...
I now know why it just started happening. About a week ago, I attempted to extract fam.crf so I could view its contents. I've done it before on other PCs, but this time I was very tired, so extracted the folder's contents directly into RES and not into its own subfolder. I was so tired and frustrated I didn't bother undoing the copy - I was looking for "undo paste" at the time - so I went through and deleted each individual file seeing it as punishment for my stupid mistake. Of course it was idiotic and, though I thought I was preserving the necessary crf files from memory, in the process I must have deleted the bitmap folder.
Lesson learned - never do stupid things!

If you have WinZip you can view the contents of the .CRF files without extracting anything.

It doesn't have to be WinZip specifically, any program which can open .zip files will open a .crf as well.
