I guess that's, as you say,
your opinion then on what
we've got for
me. Not mine. I would like Thief to continue to be the best game going. I want it alive and well. And so I'm going to pay attention when I hear it is being rebooted for the ConsoleGen, when I hear the crunch of bone-snapping chain-attacks, when I hear them toning down the magical, when I see that Garrett is being Jokered.
I want whoever has Thief to want to play Thief.
Don't get me wrong here, I don't want Thief dumbed down either. I just don't want it to be a slight tweak to what's come before. I want improvements, more ways to handle situations, smoother gameplay, more detailed environments, smarter AI. It's been about 10 years since the last game showed up. We've got faster processors, more ram to play with, and a gameplay style that still has tons of room to grow. I think we should take advantage of it.
That said, I still want the core Thief experience to remain intact. I don't want it to be an action game. If you want to fight toe to toe with every guard you come across, it should be really damn hard to do. Having a few fluff features like chain attacks and punch zone hotspots or whatever might make it easier to get out of specific situations, but doesn't necessarily point towards the whole game being dumbed down to the point where stealth and ghosting are an afterthought. It depends on how much it's used, and if you're forced to use it or not.
Toning down the magical? All that could mean is they're following more in Thief 2's footsteps, rather than Thief 1 & 3. Personally, I'd prefer they went with the latter, since I like Burricks, magic lamposts, and actually creepy zombies. Oh, and haunts. Can't forget haunts. But if it's adhering to T2's more grounded style, I won't complain too much. I'll still enjoy it.
...provided it's done well.
Garrett being jokered? Yeah, well...he's kinda corny looking now. So long as they don't change his personality to the point where he's all "HEY! I'M GRIM DARK! I CUT MYSELF FOR ATTENTION CUZ MY SOUL IS AS DARK AND GRIM AS MY EYESHADOW AND NEEDS AN OUTLET FOR IT'S PAAAAIIIINNNN! F*** SOCIETY, YO", I'll probably be alright with it. Even corny looking Garrett with his old personality would still be cool.

Same here. For the most part. I don't want exactly the same Thief. I want a Thief that's been built upon with the strengths of the old games in mind, rather than cast from the same mold.

For those here who expressed worry regarding Thief:

Hey guys, while this is definitely sad news, rest assured knowing that Eidos Montreal is not affected by this. We're still working our hardest to create great games :)

Renz' the majority of the people you are going after again and again are not even asking for a tweaked TMA, you silly taffer! :laff:
The ones who are are hardly posting at all, maybe once or twice, starting threads for impact, too.
You post all that in nearly perfect agreement with US! The real disagreements are just those little things, different from person to person, as is normal. For instance, where you say you don't care how he looks but would like his old personality, I would say his looks are part of his personality, and the new goofy gimp assassin look speaks of his personality, and that's one of the top reasons it's "wrong" to us.
You frustration with us is rooted in misunderstanding, and god, you get so close to realizing we're actually on the same page!

I think it's the way they approach the subject I take issues with. I tend to be neutral to optimistic about everything. They're overly negative and pessimistic. When all is said and done, we all want the same thing. But the way some of us approach the subject is bound to cause some conflicts.
